Planning a trip in 2024? Before you embark on your journey, it’s crucial to be well-versed in the hand luggage rules of major UK airlines like Ryanair, EasyJet, British Airways, Jet2, and TUI. With the era of free checked bags behind us, even hand luggage is subject to specific restrictions regarding size, weight, and the number of items allowed on board. This guide aims to provide an overview of the 2024 hand luggage rules for these airlines, helping you make informed decisions and avoid any surprises during your travel.

Ryanair: Personal Bag Inclusion, Priority, and Options

Ryanair, a prominent budget airline, includes a small personal bag in every fare, which must fit under the seat in front of you. This bag can be a backpack measuring 40cm by 25cm or a carry-on bag measuring 40cm by 20cm. If you wish to bring an additional bag, such as a 10kg wheelie bag (55x40x20cm), you can opt for the Priority and 2 Cabin Bags package. This allows you to board early and ensures you won’t have to wait for your bag at the terminal. In case Priority is sold out, a 10kg Check-in Bag can be purchased as an alternative.

Jet2: Free Carry-On Bag and Additional Guidelines

Jet2 permits travellers to bring one carry-on bag for free, not exceeding 10 kg and measuring no larger than 56cm x 45cm x 25cm (including wheels and handles). A small personal item, like a handbag or laptop bag, is also allowed under the seat. It’s important to note that Jet2 reserves the right to check hand luggage into the aircraft hold for operational or capacity reasons. In such cases, valuable items should be carried in the cabin.

EasyJet: Cabin Bag Allowances and Additional Options

EasyJet allows each passenger to bring one small cabin bag free of charge, measuring up to 45 x 36 x 20 cm (including handles or wheels). The bag’s weight can go up to 15kg, but passengers should be able to lift and carry it independently. For an extra fee, travelers can opt for a larger cabin bag with Speedy Boarding, not exceeding 56 x 45 x 25 cm. EasyJet Plus cardholders and FLEXI fare passengers are entitled to bring a large cabin bag in addition to their small one as part of their membership or fare benefits.

British Airways: Hand Luggage Rules and Additional Considerations

British Airways has specific rules for hand luggage based on the booking type. Passengers with hand luggage-only bookings can bring one personal bag (40x30x15cm) and an additional cabin bag (56x45x25cm, max 23kg). While the personal bag is guaranteed to travel in the cabin, the larger bag may need to be checked in on busier flights. Extra bags beyond the allowance may incur charges.

TUI: Varied Rules for Different Types of Bookings

TUI’s hand luggage rules vary depending on the type of holiday booked. For package holidays, each person can bring one piece of hand luggage (up to 10kg, 55x40x20cm). Additionally, one small personal item is allowed. For flights-only bookings, passengers are permitted one piece of hand luggage (up to 10kg, 55x40x20cm) along with a small personal item. It’s essential to be able to lift the hand luggage into the overhead storage compartments.

Virgin Atlantic: Hand Luggage Allowance and Considerations for Different Ages

Virgin Atlantic allows passengers one piece of hand luggage weighing up to 10kg, along with a smaller bag like a handbag or small backpack in Economy or Premium. Children aged 0-23 months are permitted one bag weighing up to 6kg, while children aged two and above have the same allowance as adults.

Wizz Air: Similarities with Ryanair and Options for Additional Bag

Wizz Air’s rules mirror those of Ryanair, allowing one bag (40x30x20cm, up to 10kg) to fit under the seat. WIZZ Priority offers an extra cabin bag (55x40x23cm, up to 10kg) for the overhead locker. Alternatively, passengers can pay for additional checked luggage. It’s crucial to note that measurements do not include wheels, with a suggested 5cm buffer.

Making Informed Choices for a Smooth Journey

Understanding the hand luggage rules of major airlines is essential for a seamless travel experience in 2024. Whether you prioritize budget options, additional cabin space, or specific perks, being well-informed about each airline’s policies ensures you won’t encounter unexpected surprises during your trip. Consider your travel needs, destination, and luggage preferences to choose the airline that aligns best with your requirements.
