The local council is in the process of seeking endorsement for its upcoming Heritage Strategy, aimed at enhancing the borough’s appeal to both investors and tourists. Titled ‘We Are Making History,’ this strategy is slated for discussion and potential approval by the council’s Cabinet in the forthcoming week. The strategy’s primary objective is to amplify the awareness of the borough’s rich and varied heritage, which spans its prominent contribution to the Industrial Revolution, its history with protest movements like The Luddites and Women’s Suffrage, and the birth of the Rugby League.

The development of the Heritage Strategy was facilitated by the National Lottery Heritage Fund’s Resilient Heritage funding program and was shaped by a public consultation held in 2023. It is intended to complement the new Tourism and Cultural Strategies that are currently under formulation.

Richard Parry, the Strategic Director for Adults and Health at the council, shared that the unveiling of the new Heritage Strategy is perfectly timed with the borough’s 50th anniversary celebrations happening in April. He emphasized the continuous historical significance of the borough and expressed a desire for its diverse heritage to act as a beacon for the district’s future aspirations.

According to Parry, the strategy is designed to not only preserve and enhance the heritage of the borough’s scenic landscapes and towns but also to foster community cohesion by exploring innovative ways to narrate the stories of its communities. The strategy is envisioned to bolster heritage-related initiatives within the borough’s communities, thereby forging stronger communal bonds and offering enriching experiences. This, in turn, is expected to yield benefits for wellbeing, education, and skill development, while promoting inclusive engagement with the borough’s shared heritage.

Pending approval, the full details of the Heritage Strategy will be made accessible on the council’s official website, with further actions to kickstart its implementation anticipated to unfold later in 2024.
