Britain’s largest railway operator has introduced an innovative automatic weekly capping feature for customers using its pay-as-you-go service. This new tool ensures that commuters who are uncertain about the number of days they will be working from home do not miss out on the savings offered by weekly season tickets if that turns out to be the most cost-effective option.
The automatic capping feature is available on Govia Thameslink Railway’s (GTR) pay-as-you-go service, including the keyGo tap-in, tap-out ticketing system and the Key Smartcard. With the new weekly capping, customers using these GTR services will never pay more than the price of a weekly season ticket for multiple journeys between two stations within the keyGo network area in a week. This can potentially save commuters significant amounts each week.

Approximately 30,000 customers who are already using keyGo immediately qualify for these potential savings. The system charges users up to the value of the most economical weekly season ticket for their chosen route. Once customers reach this cap, any further journeys on that route for the week incur no additional cost. This means that after reaching the weekly cap, regular travelers can continue to travel for free for the remainder of the week.
To benefit from this new service, customers need to register for a Key Smartcard through the Southern, Thameslink, and Great Northern websites. Once they receive their Key Smartcard, users can log into their account, sign up to use keyGo, and qualify for the weekly capping service with just a few clicks.

Enhanced Travel Experience: This new capping tool provides a more flexible and cost-effective travel option for commuters, encouraging the use of public transport. It is especially beneficial for those with hybrid work schedules, as it adjusts automatically to provide the best value.
Economic Savings: By ensuring that travelers never pay more than the weekly cap, significant savings can be made, making commuting by train more attractive compared to other modes of transport.

Tourism Boost: With more affordable and predictable travel costs, tourists might also find train travel between major destinations more appealing, potentially boosting tourism in key areas served by GTR.
Environmental Impact: Encouraging more people to use trains over personal vehicles could lead to reduced traffic congestion and lower carbon emissions, contributing positively to environmental sustainability.
This strategic move by Britain’s largest railway operator not only aims to make train travel more affordable and convenient but also promotes the broader use of public transportation, potentially leading to increased ridership and a positive impact on both travel and tourism.
