A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Tibet near the border with Nepal on Tuesday morning, claiming at least 95 lives and injuring over 130, according to Chinese state media.
The quake, which hit at 9:05 a.m. local time, caused significant destruction in the Tingri region, a key location for travellers heading to the North Base Camp of Mount Everest.

Rescue operations are underway as the region grapples with the aftermath of this devastating natural disaster.
The epicenter of the earthquake was 10 kilometers (6 miles) below the surface, in a seismically active zone along the Himalayan foothills.

The quake was felt in neighbouring countries, including Nepal and Bhutan, with tremors causing alarm across the region.

Researchers from the China Earthquake Networks Center have reported at least three aftershocks with magnitudes above 4.0 and several smaller tremors within 90 minutes of the main quake.
The Tingri region, located in a high-altitude and remote area of Tibet, has long been a popular destination for adventurers. It serves as a critical stopover on the way to the North Base Camp, where climbers acclimatize before beginning their ascent of Mount Everest.
