UnionPay International, a premier global payment network, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Tourism Organisation of Serbia (TOS) to enhance tourists’ payment experiences and support the growth of Serbia’s tourism sector.

The MOU was officially signed in Belgrade on February 27, 2024, signaling the start of a cooperative venture between UnionPay International and TOS. The agreement specifies several collaboration areas:

Promotion of Serbia as a Travel Destination: Leveraging optimized marketing resources, the two entities plan to position Serbia as an appealing destination for UnionPay cardholders. This strategy includes highlighting Serbia’s rich cultural heritage and unique offerings, providing detailed tourism and payment information for visitors. UnionPay International is committed to enriching payment options and ensuring smooth transactions for tourists in Serbia.

Ms Bomee Sheng, Product Director of UnionPay International, expressed her enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, “We are delighted to partner with The Tourism Organisation of Serbia to promote tourism and facilitate payment experiences in Serbia. Through this partnership, we aim to provide UnionPay cardholders with enhanced convenience and benefits, ultimately contributing to the growth of Serbia’s tourism industry.”

Ms Marija Labović, CEO of National Tourism Organisation of Serbia, commented, “This partnership with UnionPay International comes at an important time as we strive to become the most popular all year destination in the region.” She outlines Belgrade’s popularity and the diversity of attractions from city breaks to natural retreats and she is looking forward to the Expo 2027 in the capital, “By leveraging UnionPay’s global network and advanced payment solutions, we are confident that we can attract more visitors to Serbia and provide them with memorable experiences.”

Benefits and Privileges: The partnership will seek out special promotions to offer additional advantages to UnionPay cardholders in Serbia. This initiative is designed to enhance the local tourism sector’s appeal and establish a mutually beneficial scenario for both UnionPay International and TOS. Serbia has recently gained popularity among Chinese tourists, known as the “heart of the Balkans,” for its stunning landscapes and cultural richness. The country’s visa-free policy and the widespread acceptance of UnionPay cards, with over 90% of local merchants and ATMs accepting them, have significantly contributed to its attractiveness. This ensures that travelers can effortlessly make payments and withdrawals across a variety of services, including shopping, dining, accommodations, fuel stations, toll booths, and tourist sites.
