In March, Times Square becomes a canvas for London-based Italian artist Quayola, captivating onlookers with “Storms,” an enthralling digital representation of the ocean’s depth. Through this exhibit, Quayola revisits traditional landscape art, breathing new life into it with modern technological applications.

His work, known for its versatility across various mediums including audiovisual performances and immersive installations, leverages custom software to cast technology as a medium that bridges the gap between reality and artifice, the tangible and the conceptual, blending historical artistic methods with contemporary innovation in the travel and tourism sector of New York City.

The creation of “Storms” involves sophisticated recording equipment capturing the tumultuous waters off Cornwall, England. These high-definition recordings are then artistically transformed by Quayola into digital renditions that mimic traditional landscape paintings.

As viewers watch, waves spread across a surreal landscape, crafting a visual narrative where nature’s raw power is digitally reinterpreted. This fusion of creativity and technological advancement prompts a reevaluation of the relationship between the natural world and its technological counterparts, proposing a harmonious coexistence that enriches the travel experience of visitors to Times Square with a new aesthetic realm.

The exhibition is a collaborative effort with Artnet, a platform dedicated to the digital art sphere and fostering conversations around the integration of art and technology. This partnership, initiated with the presentation of “Storms,” signifies the beginning of a commitment to showcase digital artwork in one of the most iconic public spaces in New York City.

Jiayin Chen, Artnet’s Vice President, expressed excitement over the collaboration with Times Square Arts, highlighting “Midnight Moment” as a premier digital art event. This partnership aims to not only display innovative art in Times Square but also to share this immersive digital art experience with Artnet’s worldwide audience, thereby enhancing the travel and tourism appeal of New York City through the integration of art and technology.
