In an ambitious stride towards sustainable transportation, New Zealand’s Lake Manapouri is set to be graced by the Candela P-12, a state-of-the-art electric ferry, marking a significant environmental milestone. This venture, as reported by Cruise & Ferry, heralds the first deployment of the Swedish-manufactured Candela P-12 beyond European borders, with operations commencing in 2025. Designed to serve the daily transit needs of Meridian Energy’s workforce and contractors at the Manapouri Power Station—New Zealand’s largest hydroelectric facility—this electric vessel epitomizes the shift towards greener alternatives in operational logistics.

The Candela P-12 is not just any ferry; it’s a marvel of modern engineering that promises to redefine marine transport efficiency. Candela Technology, the brains behind this innovation, estimates the ferry will cut down carbon emissions by 240 tons annually. This reduction is equivalent to removing 52 petrol-powered vehicles from the roads each year, marking a significant step towards Meridian Energy’s ambitious target of halving its carbon footprint by 2030.

Tania Palmer, Meridian’s General Manager of Generation, emphasized the company’s commitment to innovation and environmental stewardship in selecting the Candela P-12. The electric ferry is set to replace a diesel-powered counterpart, offering a cleaner, more efficient mode of transport that aligns with the preservation of Lake Manapouri’s pristine natural surroundings. Palmer highlighted the dual benefits of emission reduction and providing staff with an unparalleled commuting experience across what is often celebrated as New Zealand’s most picturesque lake.

The Candela P-12’s design features computer-guided hydrofoils that elevate the vessel above water at cruising speed, drastically lowering energy consumption by up to 80% compared to traditional ferries. This technology not only ensures a minimal wake, thereby protecting the lake’s delicate shoreline, but also guarantees a smooth journey for passengers, thanks to an advanced flight controller that continuously adjusts to wave conditions.

Gustav Hasselskog, CEO of Candela Technology, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with Meridian Energy, recognizing it as a leap towards global sustainability and decarbonization. The introduction of the Candela P-12 on Lake Manapouri stands as a testament to the potential for innovative technology to drive environmental progress and transform the future of transportation.
