In May 2025, North Macedonia achieved remarkable milestones in its tourism industry, setting new records with a significant Twenty-Seven Percent growth in foreign tourist arrivals. This surge in international visitors, combined with a notable increase in overnight stays, underscores the country’s rising global appeal as a top travel destination. The growing number of foreign tourists, along with extended stays, reflects a heightened interest in North Macedonia’s rich cultural heritage, stunning landscapes, and diverse attractions. This exceptional growth marks the country’s continuous progress in the global tourism market and its increasing recognition among international travelers seeking unique and immersive travel experiences.
This surge in tourism highlights North Macedonia’s potential as a vibrant travel destination, rich in cultural heritage, stunning natural landscapes, and an emerging regional tourism powerhouse. The number of foreign visitors to North Macedonia increased sharply to 101,462 in May, a 27.7% rise compared to the same month in 2024. This growth reflects a steady recovery in the tourism industry, following the global disruptions caused by the pandemic. As international travel resumes, more travelers are recognizing North Macedonia’s unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty, making it an attractive destination for various traveler types.
Not only did arrivals shoot up, but overnight stays experienced immense growth as well. The foreign tourists stayed a collective total of 164,796 nights in North Macedonia, which was an increased growth of 16.5% on an annual basis. That means not only are international tourists choosing to travel in the country, but are extending their trips further as well as gaining an in-depth understanding of local cultures.
North Macedonia’s increased popularity among foreign tourists can be traced to high regional interest in the latter from some major nations. Turkey remains the largest foreign tourist contributor, sending 28,338 tourists in May. The long-standing historic and cultural relationship between both nations, as well as direct air connections, keeps Turkish tourists flocking to North Macedonia.
Germany is also a significant market, as 15,166 German tourists visited North Macedonia in May. With their fondness for travel in Europe, German tourists are attracted to the mix of inexpensive price, high-culture, and achievable landscapes that can be found in North Macedonia. Like Germany, France is another country that has played a big role in foreign guest arrivals, as 6,059 French tourists visited in May. French travelers are becoming less interested in mass market, mainstream destinations, and North Macedonia is an ideal fit for such demand, as it possesses attractive locales and culture.
North Macedonian domestic tourism also saw positive growth. Local tourists totaled 29,277 in May 2025, marking a 7.8% growth compared to the previous year. This shows renewed enthusiasm for local travel as Macedonians prefer visiting their country for new experiences and relaxation.
There were also extended stays by domestic tourists, as overnight stays in May totalled 66,517, an increase of 12.7% compared to the previous year. This is consistent with the international growth in “staycations,” in which residents visit their home areas rather than abroad, placing an added spur under North Macedonia’s tourist economy.
The rise in both international and domestic tourism is providing significant economic benefits to North Macedonia. Increased tourist spending is benefiting key industries, including hospitality, transportation, and retail. Hotels, restaurants, and local attractions are seeing heightened demand, supporting job creation and contributing to the overall economy.
Prospects for the future for the tourist industry in North Macedonia are positive, and future expansion is expected. The government and tourist boards are set to further improve infrastructure, widen overseas promotional campaigns, and spur new products for tourist purposes in a bid to attract an even larger market. The high cultural appeal of the region, as well as growing popularity for non-touristy locations and eco-tourism, positions North Macedonia well to receive increased tourists in the near future.
As North Macedonia expands on this momentum, the country’s distinct appeal of history, nature, and lively culture is sure to keep international tourists coming, firmly establishing the nation as a rising star in regional tourism. With proper investment and planning, both foreign and domestic tourism in North Macedonia is set for further growth, solidifying the destination’s place as a top destination in Southeast Europe.
