Northeast US braces for wet and windy weather this weekend

The Northeastern United States is bracing for yet another wet and windy weekend as a significant storm, possibly evolving into a full-fledged nor’easter, is expected to develop along the East Coast.

The storm’s origins can be traced back to former Super Typhoon Bolaven, which curved east of Japan across the northern Pacific. This typhoon interacted with non-tropical storms over the Gulf of Alaska, leading to stormy weather in western Canada and the northwestern United States.

A big dip in the jet stream is expected over the Eastern states, driven by this weather pattern, setting the stage for a developing storm later this week and during the weekend. The relationship between a typhoon’s recurve in the Pacific and its impact on U.S. weather patterns has been studied extensively by AccuWeather meteorologists.

As the cold front advances from the Midwest and South Central states, the storm is likely to take shape and intensify. It will also draw in more moisture from the Atlantic, creating a scenario for heavy rain, strong winds, and building seas.

Rain will begin to affect areas from the Great Lakes to the Ohio and Tennessee valleys and the southern Appalachians by Friday. Meanwhile, the Southeast will experience showers and thunderstorms from the Carolinas to Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida.

As the storm’s energy moves eastward and taps into Atlantic moisture, it is expected to form along the Carolina coast and head northward. AccuWeather Chief On-Air Meteorologist Bernie Rayno noted that the storm would significantly strengthen, potentially evolving into a potent nor’easter. This outcome would bring heavy rain, strong winds, and rough seas.

The extent of the impact, particularly in terms of rain and wind, will be determined by the storm’s track and strength. However, there is a high likelihood of substantial rainfall and gusty winds in many parts of the northeastern U.S. and Atlantic Canada over the weekend.
