Northeastern United States to brace coastal storms

A potentially dangerous situation is unfolding in the Northeastern United States as a coastal storm brews off the coast, threatening the region with torrential rainfall and flash flooding. The meteorologists are closely monitoring this storm, which, despite being non-tropical in nature, poses a significant risk to areas still recovering from the impacts of former tropical storm Ophelia.

The current weather setup includes a band of heavy rainfall that has developed across the Interstate 95 corridor, and it is expected to persist into Friday night. Additionally, the strengthening offshore storm is bringing gusty winds and other hazards to coastal areas.

The greatest concern is centered around the New York City and Tri-State area, extending eastward to parts of Long Island and southern New England. This region is at the highest risk for the heaviest rainfall and flash flooding. However, if the axis of heavy rain shifts farther inland, areas from the lower Hudson Valley southward to eastern Pennsylvania and western New Jersey, including Philadelphia, could also face flash flooding.

Recent weather conditions have left the ground saturated, making it particularly susceptible to flash flooding. For instance, Central Park in New York City has already received a remarkable 8.73 inches of rainfall this month, far exceeding the historical average for September. In parts of central and northern New Jersey, even a relatively small amount of additional rain, such as 0.75 to 1.50 inches within a three-hour period, could trigger flash flooding.

The storm is expected to bring a widespread 2-4 inches of rainfall to the region, with localized areas receiving even higher amounts. Some locations, particularly in western Long Island, New York, and just north of New York City, could see 4-8 inches of rain. Rain rates exceeding 1 inch per hour are also possible during the heaviest downpours.

Given these conditions, there is a significant risk of flash flooding and travel disruptions in the affected areas. Residents and travelers are advised to stay informed about weather updates and exercise caution during this potentially hazardous weather event.
