For eight passengers, a much-aspired cruise holiday became a nightmare when they were left stranded on the African island of Príncipe and São Tomé after their cruise ship left them as they didn’t return on time from a private tour.
Six tourists were from the U.S. and two were from Australia, aboard the Norwegian Dawn on March 20th, a Norwegian cruise line ship. It departed from Cape Town, South Africa to start a 21-day trip up to the coast of Africa that will end its journey in Barcelona, Spain, on April 10th.
However, on March 27th, these eight tourists didn’t return on time to the ship from a private tour. On the island, this tour was not arranged by the cruise line.
Jill and Jay Campbell from South Carolina were part of this group which was left behind by the cruise line in the island.
They explained that their operator of the tour informed the cruise captain that they’ll be late to rejoin the ship. On the vessel, the local Coast Guard tried to get them but they were not permitted to board the cruise.
Therefore, for days, the couple and others got stuck on the island of Nigeria, wrestling with currency problem, and other complicated travel to get on board the ship.
