Portugal is witnessing a powerful tourism transformation as American travellers become the leading foreign visitors to the Douro region, driven by growing interest in its world-famous wine culture, breathtaking landscapes, rich heritage and improved direct air connections with the United States. While traditional destinations such as Lisbon and the Algarve continue to attract global visitors, the Douro is gaining momentum as a premium experience-led destination where travellers seek authentic Portuguese villages, river journeys and unique cultural discoveries. Rising US visitor numbers, stronger transatlantic connectivity and increased tourism promotion are helping the region enter a new era of international growth.

American travellers are increasingly changing the tourism map of Portugal, with Northern Portugal and the Douro region emerging as major winners in the growing demand from the United States market. The Douro has now become the leading destination in the region for American visitors, as more travellers from the US look beyond traditional hotspots and explore Portugal’s wine landscapes, cultural heritage and scenic countryside.

While Spanish visitors continue to represent the largest foreign tourism market across Porto and Northern Portugal as a whole, the Douro is experiencing a different trend. American travellers have moved into the top position, highlighting the region’s growing international appeal and its rising importance within Portugal’s tourism sector.

Northern Portugal Becomes a Rising Star for US Travellers

The latest tourism figures reveal a clear contrast between Northern Portugal and some of the country’s better-known destinations. While Portugal recorded a decline in American overnight stays during July compared with the previous year, Northern Portugal achieved strong growth.

According to data from Portugal’s National Statistics Institute, the country saw 19,300 fewer overnight stays from US visitors in July compared with the same period in 2025.

The decline was particularly visible in Greater Lisbon, which registered 16,900 fewer overnight stays from American tourists, representing a 6% decrease. The Algarve also experienced a drop, with 6,300 fewer overnight stays and a decline of 6.7%.

Northern Portugal followed a completely different path.

The region recorded 10,700 additional overnight stays from American visitors compared with July 2025, marking an increase of 9.3%. It was the only mainland Portuguese region to register growth from the US market during the month.

This performance reflects a wider shift in international travel preferences, as visitors increasingly seek destinations that offer authentic experiences, cultural depth and opportunities beyond crowded tourism centres.

Douro Wine Region Captures Growing American Interest

The Douro has become one of the strongest examples of Portugal’s changing tourism landscape.

Known worldwide for its vineyards, river valleys and historic landscapes, the region is attracting more American visitors searching for experiences connected to nature, culture and local traditions.

The area’s wine tourism sector has played an important role in strengthening its appeal. Visitors from the United States are increasingly drawn to vineyard experiences, scenic river journeys, traditional villages and Portugal’s unique heritage.

Northern Portugal’s promotional efforts in the US market have also helped improve awareness of the destination. Tourism campaigns across American cities have introduced more travellers to the region’s attractions and encouraged them to explore destinations beyond Lisbon and the Algarve.

The combination of strong tourism products and increasing visibility has helped the Douro become a preferred choice among international visitors from the United States.

Direct Flights Create New Opportunities for Portugal Tourism

Improved air connectivity between North America and Porto is supporting the growth of American tourism in Northern Portugal.

Direct flights reduce travel time and make the region more accessible for long-haul visitors who may previously have chosen other European destinations because of easier connections.

Delta Air Lines launched a direct service between New York John F Kennedy International Airport and Porto on 21 May 2026. The daily seasonal route created a new link between one of the United States’ largest travel markets and Northern Portugal.

The connectivity expansion is set to continue.

American Airlines has announced plans to introduce a daily seasonal route between Philadelphia and Porto from 28 March 2027. The service will operate using an Airbus A321XLR aircraft.

Portugal’s national carrier TAP Air Portugal also continues to connect Porto with important US markets, including Newark and Boston.

The expansion of transatlantic routes is expected to strengthen tourism flows, supporting hotels, restaurants, attractions and local businesses across Northern Portugal.

US Tourism Spending Strengthens Portugal’s Economy

Despite short-term variations between regions, American tourism continues to deliver significant economic value to Portugal.

Tourism data from the first six months of 2026 shows continued growth from the US market.

Overnight stays by American visitors increased by 5.3% compared with the same period in 2025, while the number of American guests rose by 3.3%.

Tourism revenue generated by US travellers increased by 8.1%, showing the strong economic contribution of this market. Passenger arrivals from the United States also grew by 5.7%.

American spending inside Portugal continued to rise as well. Purchases made using US bank cards increased by 13.4%, underlining the importance of American visitors for the wider tourism economy.

The United States remains one of Portugal’s most valuable international markets. During the first half of 2026, American visitors represented 12.2% of foreign guests, 10% of international overnight stays and 11.8% of tourism receipts.

American travellers are reshaping Portugal’s tourism landscape as the Douro emerges as the country’s rising international hotspot, powered by its wine heritage, natural beauty and stronger US connections.

Northern Portugal Emerges as America’s Next Portuguese Favourite

The rise of American tourism in Northern Portugal reflects a broader change in how international travellers experience the country.

Portugal’s famous destinations continue to attract millions of visitors, but regions such as the Douro are gaining attention among travellers looking for less crowded and more immersive experiences.

With its combination of historic towns, wine culture, natural beauty and improved global connections, Northern Portugal is strengthening its position as one of Europe’s most attractive emerging tourism regions.

For the Douro, the transformation is already clear. American travellers have become the region’s leading foreign tourism market, marking a major milestone in Portugal’s continued growth as a global travel destination.
