The number of tourists from most of the top 10 countries visiting SA went down in August compared to the year before.

Only visitors from Italy, the US and India increased.

Tourists from the UK, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Australia, China and Spain have all declined.

The tourism sector, which is important for generating jobs and initiating economic growth in South Africa, has been struggling to stay competitive.

Uncertainty regarding visa arrangements for visitors from certain countries, travel visas for minors and concerns over crime has been the major setbacks.

Tourism accounts for less than 10 percent of total employment in South Africa.
