December 1 marks the 30th anniversary of Oceanwide Expeditions. Beginning with a modest three-masted herring lugger, Oceanwide has extended into a four-vessel fleet presenting expeditions in numerous places all through the Arctic, Antarctica and the sub-Antarctic islands.

Created in December 1993, OEX functioned primarily in Belize and the Galapagos prior to shifting its emphasis to polar destinations like Svalbard and Greenland, increasing an impressive fleet that allowed it to surge processes to Antarctica, South Georgia and the Falklands.

It was not till 2009 that Oceanwide started to look like its present arrangement, attaining its longest-standing vessel, Plancius. It was followed by Ortelius in 2011, and ultimately the first-registered Polar Class 6 vessel in the world – Hondius in 2019.

However, what has remained unchanged for Oceanwide’s 30 years as a leader in polar tourism is its pledge toward close-contact, wildlife-centered trips that highlight maximum beach time and out-of-doors happenings. Possessing and functioning all of its vessels also permits OEX to implement extremely flexible routes that react fast to every weather and environment occasion as it happens.

This lively effort has given Oceanwide five World’s Leading Polar Expedition Operator prizes, two World’s Best Expedition Cruise Line honor among several others. Nonetheless, OEX endures to highlight immersive travel rather than awards, holding true to its origins as a family-run business functioning out of the Dutch port settlement of Vlissingen.
