One in 22 train services disrupted or cancelled during the last phase of 2018

As per the official figures train services were at their least reliable in 17 years with the probability of one in 22 services being severely disrupted or cancelled in the last three months of 2018.

The office of Rail and Road show’s latest figures revealed their national reliability measure recording the proportion of trains that were severely disrupted or cancelled were at their highest level since 2001.

In the last three months the overall punctuality of British rail services were slumped as compared to the same period in 2017.

In 13 years the number of trains that were late stood at the worst level and one in seven trains were delayed by at least five minutes.

Mainly due to the timetable change in May 2018 there was a decline in punctuality that led to disruption during the summer where the Northern Rail services was badly hit along with the Govia Thameslink.

Snow and leaves on the line was another factor impacting the punctuality. The Transport Select Committee said that around a fifth of the rail passengers had suffered appalling services and were badly let down by the whole system.

Alex Hayman, Which? managing director of public markets voiced his opinion concerning the appalling disruption over the past year which has had a devastating impact on passengers’ lives. It has left almost half of commuters in stress and trust in the industry chronically low.

The government must listen to the concerns of the passengers if the government’s rail review wants to restore the trust in the system.

Automatic compensations should be rolled out across the network so that all the passengers get the money they are owed for delays and cancellations while the industry should not wait to make improvements.
