Oman Air’s declaration of beginning operations from the new international Mopa airport has given rise to worry and apprehension among the tourism stakeholders along Saxtti coastal belt.

Nothing has been heard from Saxtti politicos and those from down South Goa regarding the airport dispute against the background of the tension for saving Dabolim in South district around a decade and a half before. However, tourism stakeholders said that the message is now clear that the days of the Dabolim airport are now numbered, with Oman Air choosing Mopa for its operations from the coming year.

Tourism stakeholders chose to remain optimistic regarding tourism’s future in South Goa in case of the nonexistence of Dabolim airport.

Relying on the charter flights for sustenance, smaller hoteliers opined that charters functioning from Mopa might not ring in positive news for the hoteliers.

Serafino Cota, the immediate past president of the Smaller Hoteliers Association said that the writing on the wall is evident that Dabolim will be closed at some point of time. Cota said that there’s a standard in international tourism that any tourist landing from a charter flight should be lodged in a hotel within an hour. Hotels in down South, Canacona were not receiving the charter tourists for a big reason that one fails to reach the taluka within an hour from Dabolim airport.
