On 5th January, Kevin J. Thibault, CEO of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority, led an animated fireside discussion featuring U.S. Under Secretary of Commerce for the Minority Business Development Agency, Donald R. Cravins, Jr. The conversation highlighted the essential role that minority and small businesses play in bolstering not only local communities but also global economies.
Under Secretary Cravins expressed his optimism regarding the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority’s dedication to diversity not only within its internal structure but also in its outreach to minority business enterprises and underserved sectors. “Witnessing a significant economic hub like the Orlando International Airport, overseen by the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority, actively embracing diversity is heartening. This inclusivity aligns with the ultimate mission of the Minority Business Development Agency: expanding access to crucial resources for business growth, including capital, contracts, networks, and markets.”
Mr. Thibault emphasized, “The Minority Business Development Agency takes proactive steps to prepare minority and underserved businesses for forthcoming opportunities.” He highlighted the Aviation Authority’s near four-decade commitment to fostering the growth of minority and small businesses through diverse programs, expressing eagerness for the chance these initiatives provide, offering every business an avenue for success.
During the morning dialogue, attended by GOAA Board members, including Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings, Board Treasurer Belinda Kirkegard, and Congressmen Darren Soto and Maxwell Frost, both Mr. Thibault and Under Secretary Cravins underscored the significance of collaboration. The event also welcomed local business leaders and representatives from various Chambers of Commerce.
Terminal C, the Aviation Authority’s most significant construction endeavor to date, opened in 2022. This project awarded an estimated $570M for construction to small businesses and resulted in the creation of nearly 6,000 jobs. Moreover, around 130 small business construction subcontractors from Central Florida were hired, demonstrating robust support for minority partners.
Under Secretary Cravins disclosed that the MBDA, now a permanent federal agency, recently introduced several initiatives, such as the Capital Readiness Program, fostering incubators for emerging industries and supporting socially and economically disadvantaged business owners.
