Orlando Executive Airport Hosts Successful 12th Annual Runway 5K a Success for Angels Flight Southeast

The morning at Orlando Executive Airport (ORL) was picturesque, with clear skies and a golden sunrise illuminating the runways, which were bustling with activity. The occasion was the Runway 5K – Run for the Angels, a unique event that transformed the airfield into a track for runners and walkers.

This event, in its 12th year, served as a fundraiser for Angel Flight Southeast, a non-profit organization that provides volunteer pilot services for public benefit flying. ORL, the host site, embraced this opportunity as part of its Community Strategic Priority to increase its involvement and impact within the local community.

A total of 560 runners participated in this year’s race, marking it as the second highest turnout in its history. Many of the participants, 343 to be exact, had run in this event at least once in the last six years, indicating its popularity among the community. The event successfully raised $15,190 for Angel Flight, showcasing the community’s support for this noble cause.

Sixteen-year-old William Hernandez claimed the overall victory, completing the race in an impressive 15 minutes and 46 seconds. Among the female participants, 57-year-old Landthis Szabelski took the top spot with a time of 22 minutes and 30 seconds.

Medals were awarded to the top three finishers in each age category, as well as to the fastest male and female overall, and the fastest male and female over 40 (masters winners).

The event received generous support from community partners such as Loyal Wingman, Middlesex, and C&S Companies, who assisted with various aspects of the event, including mapping and marking the 5K route.

In addition to the race, attendees had the opportunity to explore a static display featuring a variety of aircraft, including jets, piston-powered planes, and helicopters. Angel Flight Southeast offers vital services to the community, primarily arranging free air transportation by private aircraft to distant medical facilities when commercial services are not feasible. The nonprofit also plays a crucial role in disaster relief efforts and provides humanitarian flights for various causes.
