Over 300 flights were canceled and delayed across Brazil as severe weather disrupted operations for major airlines including American Airlines, Azul Brazilian Airlines, LATAM, TAP Air Portugal, Emirates, Ethiopian Airlines, ITA Airways, GOL Linhas Aéreas, KLM, Qatar Airways, and South African Airways at key airports in São Paulo, Curitiba, Campinas, Brasília, and beyond. Torrential rain, thunderstorms, and low visibility conditions swept across the region, grounding aircraft, forcing cancellations, and causing widespread delays that rippled through both domestic and international routes. As airport crews scrambled to manage the backlog and rebook passengers, the full impact of the storm underscored the fragility of airline schedules during extreme weather events.

São Paulo-Guarulhos Hit the Hardest with 158 Disruptions

The largest number of affected flights occurred at São Paulo–Guarulhos International Airport, the country’s busiest aviation hub. A total of 149 flights were delayed while 9 were outright canceled due to adverse weather conditions.

LATAM Brasil bore the brunt of the chaos at Guarulhos, with 87 delays—affecting 20% of its schedule—and 6 cancellations. Azul Brazilian Airlines faced 9 delays and 2 cancellations, while Qatar Airways canceled one flight and saw a delay in another. Several other global and regional carriers were also affected: Emirates, Ethiopian Airlines, ITA Airways, JetSMART, KLM, LATAM Colombia, South African Airways, TAP Air Portugal, and American Airlines each recorded delayed flights. Notably, TAP, KLM, and South African Airways all experienced 50% delay rates on the few scheduled flights they operated.

Afonso Pena Airport in Curitiba Sees 34 Disruptions

At Afonso Pena International Airport in Curitiba, bad weather led to 28 delays and 6 flight cancellations. Among the most affected airlines were Azul Brazilian Airlines and LATAM Brasil. Azul Conecta, which operates smaller regional aircraft, reported a 50% cancellation rate, grounding 2 out of 4 flights scheduled that day.

LATAM Brasil saw 8 delays, with 2 cancellations, while GOL Linhas Aéreas Inteligentes faced 7 delays affecting 18% of its operations. Despite the challenges, no U.S.-bound flights were canceled or delayed from this location.

Brasília Records 52 Disruptions Amid Heavy Rain

Presidente Juscelino Kubitschek International Airport in Brasília was also impacted, with 48 delays and 4 cancellations. LATAM Brasil again emerged as one of the most affected carriers, with 24 delayed flights and 3 cancellations.

Azul Brazilian Airlines had 10 delays and 1 cancellation, while GOL Linhas Aéreas and LATAM (mainline) faced moderate disruptions. TAP Air Portugal reported delays on all of its scheduled departures from the capital—two flights in total—resulting in a 100% delay rate for the airline out of Brasília.

Campinas’ Viracopos International Sees 73 Flight Issues

Viracopos International Airport in Campinas recorded a total of 67 delays and 6 cancellations, mainly attributed to severe weather conditions in the southeastern region. Azul Brazilian Airlines—headquartered at this airport—experienced a significant operational strain, with 60 delays and 3 cancellations.

Azul Conecta faced disruption as well, canceling 3 flights and delaying 5, making it one of the highest affected regional operators. EuroAtlantic Airways, although operating a limited schedule, also encountered delays on 100% of its flights, though it reported no cancellations.

Airline Overview

A wide range of carriers reported operational interruptions due to the poor weather. The full list of impacted airlines includes: American Airlines, Azul Brazilian Airlines, Azul Conecta, Emirates, Ethiopian Airlines, EuroAtlantic Airways, GOL Linhas Aéreas Inteligentes, ITA Airways, JetSMART, KLM, LATAM, LATAM Brasil, LATAM Colombia, Qatar Airways, South African Airways, and TAP Air Portugal. Among them, LATAM Brasil, Azul, and GOL experienced the most widespread delays and cancellations across multiple hubs.

São Paulo–Guarulhos International Airport (GRU)

Afonso Pena International Airport (CWB) – Curitib

Presidente Juscelino Kubitschek International Airport (BSB) – Brasília

Viracopos International Airport (VCP) – Campinas

Over 300 flights were canceled and delayed across Brazil as severe weather battered major airports in São Paulo, Curitiba, Campinas, and Brasília, disrupting operations for airlines like American, LATAM, Azul, TAP, Emirates, Qatar, and more. Torrential rain and low visibility forced widespread groundings and cancellations across both domestic and international routes.

Passengers Advised to Recheck Flight Status

With weather systems continuing to shift across Brazil, airline officials and airport authorities have advised passengers to check their flight status in real-time and plan for possible delays. Travelers are also encouraged to arrive early at airports, especially those operating through the heavily impacted hubs of São Paulo, Brasília, and Campinas.

Airlines are actively working to rebook affected passengers and mitigate the cascading delays caused by the weather disruptions. Still, with forecasts suggesting more unstable conditions in the coming days, Brazil’s aviation sector remains on alert.
