United Airlines flight attendants take a stand worldwide as CEO’s pay surges by 90%. Airport pickets spread across the globe.
On Thursday, flight attendants from United Airlines demonstrated at 17 airports globally, voicing their grievances over salary issues, according to statements from the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA.
The union highlighted that United’s CEO, Scott Kirby, experienced a nearly 90% increase in compensation in 2023. Documents from the company disclosed earlier this month reveal Kirby’s earnings for the past year at $18.5 million, a significant rise from the previous year’s $9.8 million. This bump in earnings included $6.6 million in cash from an incentive scheme, more than $1 million in salary, $10.7 million in stock options, and an additional $155,740 labeled as “other compensation.”
Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows the average salary for a flight attendant was $70,000 in 2023.
The AFA has mentioned that discussions over the contract have been ongoing for more than two years.
Skift reported that roughly a dozen flight attendants were picketing outside LaGuardia Airport in New York this Thursday. Demonstrations also took place in Austin, Cleveland, Chicago, San Diego, Guam, and the UK.
In a related development, last July, United settled a contract with its pilots that included salary increases of up to 40% over the contract’s duration.
