A new survey from VisitEngland, the Easter Trip Tracker, reveals that 10.6 million Brits are planning to take an overnight holiday within the UK this Easter, contributing an estimated £3.9 billion boost to the UK economy. This marks a significant increase compared to the 6.7 million people, or 12% of the population, planning to travel abroad for the holiday weekend.
The latest figures are on par with last year’s Easter travel predictions, where 11 million Brits were also expected to take an overnight domestic trip during the long weekend. In comparison, 6.5 million Brits had opted for UK holidays during Easter 2023.

Strong Domestic Travel Trends
Despite ongoing financial concerns, such as the rising cost of living, domestic tourism is proving resilient. The survey indicates that the majority of Brits planning UK holidays are opting for shorter, one-to-three-night breaks. This trend highlights the increasing preference for more affordable, local getaways rather than extended vacations abroad.

A further 3.4 million people were undecided about taking a domestic trip, with many citing uncertainty over weather conditions and affordability as key factors influencing their decision.
Economic Impact and Local Benefits

The economic boost generated by domestic travel this Easter is crucial for UK tourism businesses, many of which rely on the busy spring period for cash flow after the slower winter months. The £3.9 billion windfall is expected to support hotels, attractions, restaurants, and local economies across the country.
Patricia Yates, Chief Executive of VisitEngland, commented on the significance of these findings, saying, “Tourism businesses and destinations will be looking to the critical Easter weekend for much-needed cash flow. It’s encouraging to see so many people planning to holiday at home.”
She added, “From scenic countryside walks and beachside fish and chips to city breaks exploring culture, Britain in springtime is a special experience. While the cost of living remains a concern, people are still eager to explore local destinations, even if it means booking later or taking shorter breaks. We urge visitors to support our amazing tourism businesses this spring.”
Reasons Behind Domestic Travel Preference
The survey highlights the appeal of short UK breaks for families and individuals, with a variety of holiday options ranging from relaxing seaside escapes to vibrant city weekends. British travelers are increasingly drawn to affordable and accessible holiday destinations, making spring the perfect time to experience the UK’s natural beauty and cultural offerings.
For many, the Easter period represents a chance to escape everyday life without the stress of international travel. From exploring historical landmarks to enjoying leisurely days on the beach, the UK offers an abundance of experiences for every type of traveler.
Conclusion: UK Travel Industry’s Easter Boost
The figures from VisitEngland demonstrate a continued preference for domestic tourism, with a strong turnout expected for UK destinations this Easter. As the UK tourism industry recovers, it will be important for businesses to cater to the demand for shorter, affordable breaks while offering unique and memorable experiences to visitors.
