St Leonard’s Church in Watlington, Oxfordshire, has embraced an innovative approach to fundraising by opening its doors to holiday guests, marking it as the first church in the county to participate in the “champing” scheme. This initiative, managed by the Churches Conservation Trust, allows visitors to book overnight stays at selected historical church buildings throughout England and Wales. Since the scheme’s launch at this location, the church has reportedly seen a surge in interest, receiving numerous inquiries from potential guests.

Rev Daniel Thompson, the vicar of St Leonard’s, shared that the response from guests has been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing their delight at the unique experience provided by the church. The initial visitors, a couple from the U.S., reportedly described their stay as “absolutely perfect.” This feedback underscores the appeal of the champing experience, which combines historical charm with modern convenience, offering beds, kitchen facilities, and tourist information to enhance visitors’ stays.

The vicar pointed out that the champing scheme aligns with Christian values of hospitality, offering guests a chance for rest and enjoyment within a sacred space. He emphasized the profound impact of having families spend part of their holiday in the church, highlighting how it integrates spiritual heritage with contemporary leisure activities.

This novel method of fundraising not only helps maintain the church’s upkeep but also introduces a new dimension to its community engagement and outreach efforts. Since the trust initiated champing in 2015, the concept has grown in popularity, offering an affordable, culturally rich lodging option for tourists at £49 per night.

The initiative offers travelers a unique accommodation experience that highlights local history and provides a tranquil retreat. As St Leonard’s continues to welcome guests from around the world, it is set to become a distinctive destination that attracts those looking for something beyond the typical tourist experience, blending history, hospitality, and heritage in one setting.
