The “2024 Silk Road Week” ended on a high note on October 14th in Paris, marked by the opening ceremony of the prestigious exhibition titled “Charm of the Silk Roads: Chinese Silk Arts” at the Hôtel d’Heidelbach, Musée national des arts asiatiques-Guimet. This event, which highlighted the deep historical and cultural ties between China and France, served as the culmination of a week dedicated to showcasing the significance of the ancient Silk Roads and the modern evolution of Chinese silk artistry.

Celebrating Cultural Exchange Between China and France

The exhibition was spearheaded by the Publicity Department of the CPC Zhejiang Provincial Committee and the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, with the organizational support of the China National Silk Museum and the Nouvel Institut Franco-Chinois. This major cultural event aimed to emphasize the contemporary relevance of silk art and the traditional craftsmanship that has flourished along the Silk Roads. It provided a platform for cultural exchange and highlighted the continuous dialogue between Chinese and French civilizations through art and fashion. The exhibition will continue for a month at the L’institut Marangoni in Paris, offering visitors extended access to these unique cultural displays.

Opening Ceremony and Distinguished Guests

More than 100 esteemed guests were present at the opening ceremony, showcasing the global significance of the event. Notable attendees included Alain Labat, Vice President of the Nouvel Institut Franco-Chinois; Corinne Thépaut-Cabasset, President of the International Committee ICOM for the museums and collections of Costume, Fashion, and Textiles; Mehrdad Shabahang, Project Officer for UNESCO’s Silk Roads Programme; Jamel Oubechou, Director of Office Department, Musée Guimet; Paolo Meroni, Director of Education at Istituto Marangoni Fashion School; and Jiao Tianlong, Vice Director of Bowers Museum (USA). Additionally, several Chinese officials were present, including Liu Hongge, Director of the Paris Chinese Cultural Center; Zhao Cheng, Head of the Information Office of Zhejiang Provincial People’s Government; and Chen Guangsheng, Director of Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture, Radio, Television, and Tourism.

Showcasing China’s Sericulture Heritage

As part of the exhibition, the project titled “Beyond the Mulberry Fields: China Sericulture Intangible Cultural Heritages” took center stage. The exhibition offered visitors an opportunity to witness China’s rich heritage in silk production, with traditional Hangzhou-style embroidery presented by Jin Jiahong, a National Master of Arts and Crafts in China. Other demonstrations included kesi weaving and gold printing, which captivated audiences with their intricate detail and historical significance.

Fashion, Dialogue, and Innovation: Parallel Events

Two significant events ran concurrently with the exhibition, further enhancing the cultural exchange between China and France:

  1. Sino-French Fashion Dialogue: This symposium focused on the importance of museums in preserving fashion history and popular culture, while also exploring innovative design inspired by museum collections. Experts from museums and universities in both China and France, alongside prominent fashion designers, discussed their latest research and shared practical insights. The dialogue underscored the ongoing collaboration between the two nations in promoting cultural heritage through fashion.
  2. Sino-French Fashion Appointment: Silk Road Heritage Innovation Design: This fashion show was another highlight of the Silk Road Week. Designers were tasked with incorporating symbolic patterns from the Tang Dynasty’s Silk Road period into modern fashion designs. Over 40 unique costume designs, created by fashion designers from around the world, were presented by 20 models from Zhejiang Sci-Tech University. Among the featured designers was Prof. Ji Xiaofen, Director of the China National Silk Museum, whose contributions to the show were widely praised for their innovative use of ancient design elements in modern fashion.

Building Cultural Bridges: Commemorating 60 Years of Sino-French Relations

As the event coincided with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and France, the 2024 Silk Road Week events were especially significant. The series of exhibitions, fashion shows, and academic dialogues served not only to highlight the historical connections between the two nations but also to promote future international cooperation. The aim of the event was to foster cultural understanding and to create a more influential international communication system for Chinese traditional culture.
