To commemorate Women’s History Month, Visit Philadelphia is expanding its innovative Little Free(dom) Library campaign to include works by female authors that have faced censorship. This initiative, originally unveiled in February to spotlight literature by African American writers for Black History Month, is a key component of Visit Philadelphia’s efforts to present the city as an ideal, inclusive, and welcoming place through its “In Pursuit of A More Perfect Union” series.

Angela Val, the organization’s leader, expressed excitement about the initiative’s success and its expansion to include a broader range of stories from female writers, aligning with the celebration of Women’s History Month. She emphasized Philadelphia’s commitment to creating a space where everyone feels valued and can express their true selves.

The Little Free(dom) Library initiative is a collaboration between Visit Philadelphia, Little Free Library, and the Free Library of Philadelphia, offering insights into the featured books.

Originally featuring 12 books, including works by female authors, the initiative added two new titles in honor of Women’s History Month: Kelly Yang’s “Front Desk” and bell hooks’ “Feminism is for Everybody.”

The community can access these books at 14 different locations, including visitor centers and community organizations like the newly included Queen & Rook Game Cafe. The full list of sites and available titles can be found on Visit Philadelphia’s website.

Moreover, Visit Philadelphia is curating a series of events and activities throughout the city to honor women’s contributions and stories in the Greater Philadelphia Area, all detailed on their website.

Event highlights include the Badass Women’s History Tour by Beyond the Bell Tours, showcasing notable women in Philadelphia’s history; the 19th Amendment exhibit at the National Constitution Center; and the premiere of “Ladysitting” at Arden Theatre Company, among others. These events aim to celebrate the achievements and narratives of women, offering diverse and enriching experiences to visitors and residents alike.

For those interested in exploring Philadelphia’s rich history and culture through the lens of women’s contributions, Visit Philadelphia provides a plethora of opportunities to engage with and learn from these impactful stories.
