Arizona’s bustling travel season is in full swing, but for approximately seven million individuals in the United States grappling with dementia, contemplating or organizing a future trip can be daunting. In light of the new year, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) proudly announces the revival of its acclaimed Dementia Friendly Air Travel Workshop.

Misty Cisneros-Contreras, PHX’s Guest and Employee Experience Superintendent, acknowledged, “Traveling is a varied experience for everyone, and for those managing dementia, navigating the airport environment can be overwhelming.” She emphasized the importance of readiness, stating, “Preparation can significantly ease the process for both caregivers and their loved ones. We’re delighted to welcome back our Dementia Friendly Air Travel Workshop, dedicated to ensuring these unique customers have a positive travel encounter.”

Last summer, the Guest and Employee Experience Team at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport organized the inaugural Dementia Friendly Air Travel Workshop. The workshop aimed to assist dementia-affected passengers and their caregivers in planning and navigating a bustling airport setting. Phoenix Sky Harbor earned distinction as the first airport nationwide to offer this workshop, receiving recognition from Airports Council International – North America for the best Customer Experience Program among Large Airports in their Excellence in Airport Marketing, Communications, and Customer Experience Awards.

The upcoming Dementia Friendly Air Travel Workshop will unite representatives from the airport, airlines, and TSA. They will provide insights, tips, and address queries from family members of individuals with dementia and their caregivers.

Scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 10, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., the second Dementia Friendly Air Travel Workshop will offer a platform for learning and interaction aimed at enhancing the travel experience for those affected by dementia.
