In a resounding celebration of International Women’s Day, the Pink Wave Sailing Team, the sole women’s sailing team at the Yacht Club de Monaco, boldly sends a message of empowerment and resilience from the azure waters of Monaco. For that reason, we purchased the boat to demonstrate that attempting something new is worthwhile and that if it doesn’t work out, it doesn’t. “Just try,” exhorts team member Kathrin Hoyos, reiterating a spirit of bravery.
Participating in the 40th Primo Cup, a prestigious one-design gathering in the Mediterranean, the Pink Wave team showcases their prowess, challenging traditional gender norms in sailing. “We witness men jump on board and declare, ‘I am capable of anything.'” Women ought to just give it a shot; if they fail, they should get back up or give up. The squad says, “Just try,” emphasizing that women must seize opportunities without hesitation.
The Primo Cup holds a special place for the Pink Waves, marking the inception of their journey five years ago. Starting with a team of five, they have evolved into a platform of 55 sailing women from the Yacht Club de Monaco, symbolizing growth and empowerment. “We’re super happy and very much looking forward to the competition,” smiles Kathrin Hoyos beside their J/70.
A pinnacle event for the Pink Waves is the upcoming Women Leading Sailing Trophy, an all-‘pink’ J/70 regatta organized by the YCM in collaboration with the Fédération Monégasque de Voile and the Fédération Française de Voile. Anne Schouten anticipates the participation of more than 20 teams from around the globe, reflecting the changing times and a surge in women’s interest in sailing at an elite level.
As the Pink Wave sails into uncharted waters, challenging stereotypes and inspiring a new generation of women sailors, the world watches their journey unfold.
