Embark on a captivating exploration of the past and future of plastics through the exclusive traveling exhibit titled “Plastic: Remaking Our World,” making its debut in Asia at the National Museum of Singapore (NMS) from January 27 to June 23, 2024.

This mobile exhibition, presented by the Vitra Design Museum, V&A Dundee, and maat, Lisbon, unveils the extraordinary ascent of plastics in the 20th century and presents innovative solutions for a more sustainable utilization of plastics in society. Showcasing over 300 artifacts, the exhibit incorporates a local narrative, delving into Singapore’s history with plastics. It seamlessly blends physical and digital displays, featuring items from the National Collection, and provides an interactive space. The exhibition is divided into three sections: “Kalpa; Synthetica,” “Petromodernity and Plasticene: Plastics from 1850 until Today,” and “Re-,” offering an immersive historical journey that traces the material’s evolution both locally and globally. The exploration extends to the future, encouraging discussions on adopting a more sustainable approach to plastic use. Notable artifacts include iconic items like Barbie dolls and Plack picnic ware, Bakelite (a historic material pivotal for household electrical appliances), and the futuristic Space Age Ball Chair.

Visitors of all ages can engage with educational elements and programs, including the “Plastics in Our Lives” interactive space outside the exhibition, exploring the ubiquitous presence of plastics in daily life. The on-site gamified experience, the “Green Detective’s Challenge,” tests visitors’ knowledge on recycling. The exhibit also features local initiatives and research projects promoting eco-friendly uses of plastic. A diverse range of programs, such as hands-on workshops, experiential tours, and live demonstrations of the exhibition’s injection machine, offers insights into creating useful household items from recycled plastic. Immerse yourself in this thought-provoking exhibition that not only sheds light on the history of plastics but also inspires a collective journey toward a more sustainable future.
