Poland railway revolution: first step in warsaw-lódź high-speed rail line approved

Poland‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ is one step closer to a full high-speed rail network, after it was able to secure the first definitive location for a very important segment of the Warsaw–Łódź HSR line. This is a landmark moment for the flagship program that will connect the capital of Warsaw, the new Central Communication Port (CPK) Airport, and the city of Łódź by fast ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌train.

First Location Decision Secured for Key Section

The initial location decision covers a one-kilometre stretch near the Warszawa West station. This section of the line is important because it will form part of the outbound track from Warsaw, serving as a key link to both the CPK Airport and Łódź. A significant portion of this route will pass through a tunnel close to the Warszawa West station.

This decision marks the first of twelve required approvals needed for the entire high-speed rail project. The development of this stretch is crucial to the overall success of the line, which is planned as part of Poland’s extensive high-speed rail network.

Connecting to Existing Infrastructure

This segment will integrate with Poland’s current railway system, providing a seamless transition from the high-speed rail line to existing tracks. This connection ensures that the project aligns with Poland’s ongoing railway infrastructure improvements. The high-speed line will be part of a wider “Y” configuration of the rail network, which will ultimately offer faster connections between major Polish cities.

Progress in Design and Permits

The design phase for the 140-kilometre section connecting Warsaw and Łódź is nearing completion. Poland’s state-owned railway company, CPK (Centralny Port Komunikacyjny), is overseeing the project. The company has already submitted eight of the twelve necessary location decision applications and has secured all required environmental permits.

Additionally, CPK has obtained nine of the fourteen water-law decisions required for the development. This rapid progress indicates that the project is on track for completion, with plans to open the Warsaw–Łódź section by the end of 2032, coinciding with the anticipated launch of the CPK Airport.

A Focus on Land Acquisition

The Warsaw–Łódź high-speed rail line is also a part of the Railway Voluntary Acquisition Programme. Through this program, CPK has already acquired 151 plots of land, covering 159 hectares. This acquisition has ensured that more than 95 percent of eligible landowners have agreed to sell or participate in the project, which is a crucial step for keeping the project on schedule.

Improved Travel Times for Passengers

Once the high-speed rail line is operational, it will drastically reduce travel times between Warsaw and Łódź. The trip, which currently takes about 70 minutes, will be cut down to approximately 40 minutes, offering a faster and more efficient alternative to road travel.

The high-speed line will also connect Warsaw to the CPK Airport in under 20 minutes, significantly improving access to one of Poland’s largest transportation hubs. Additionally, as the network expands, the travel time from Warsaw to Poznań will drop to just under 1 hour and 40 minutes, while travel from Warsaw to Wrocław will be completed in less than half the time it currently takes.

Future Expansion and Full Network Timeline

This development is part of Poland’s broader vision for a high-speed rail network that will connect cities across the country. In addition to the Warsaw–Łódź section, subsequent lines from Łódź to Sieradz, Wrocław, and Poznań are scheduled to be completed by 2035. This comprehensive plan aims to reduce travel times, enhance connectivity, and boost economic development across Poland.

CPK Investment and Funding

The Polish government has committed substantial funds to support the high-speed rail project, with more than 76 billion PLN allocated for railway investments by 2032. This investment represents two-thirds of the total amount set aside for the ongoing CPK Multiannual Programme. The CPK’s efforts are part of a broader strategy to modernize Poland’s transportation infrastructure and promote sustainable and efficient travel options.

What Travelers Can Expect

For travelers planning to use the new high-speed rail line, the improvements will be substantial. In addition to reduced travel times, the modern trains will offer comfort, speed, and reliable service. Travelers can expect a streamlined experience, with faster connections between key cities and the new airport.

Guide for Travelers:

Conclusion: A Step Towards Modernizing Poland’s Rail Infrastructure

The progress of the Warsaw–Łódź high-speed rail line marks a significant step in Poland’s efforts to modernize its transportation infrastructure. As construction moves forward, the high-speed rail network will offer faster, more efficient travel options for passengers, boosting Poland’s connectivity and economic growth. With substantial government investment and strong progress in land acquisition and permits, this project promises to transform how Poles travel across the country.

By the time the network is fully operational, Poland will have one of Europe’s most advanced and fastest rail systems, significantly enhancing travel efficiency and offering a more sustainable mode of transportation for its citizens.
