During his annual State of the Port 2024 speech, Danny Wan, the Executive Director of the Port of Oakland, outlined key infrastructure and environmental initiatives set to reshape shipping and transportation in Northern California. Addressing a packed audience of Port and Airport stakeholders, community leaders, and elected officials, Wan underscored the significance of proposed projects, such as expanding the shipping turning basins in Oakland, upgrading Oakland International Airport terminals, and implementing various measures to achieve the Port’s zero-emissions target.

“Through our focus on upgrading and modernizing infrastructure, the Port will reshape shipping, travel, and entertainment,” said Port of Oakland Executive Director Danny Wan. “All these projects are essential for local job creation and the economic vitality of the San Francisco Bay Area.”

The Port aims to modernize terminals at Oakland International Airport to meet future travel demands, enhance passenger experiences, and diversify regional flight options. Additionally, widening the Oakland Seaport turning basins will improve safety and efficiency for navigating large ships, safeguarding jobs linked to the Port of Oakland.

Last year, the Biden Administration designated California as a hydrogen hub, earmarking federal and state funding for hydrogen projects at the Port of Oakland. This decision included up to $1.2 billion in federal funds for project development.

Construction has commenced on a hydrogen fuel station near the Oakland Seaport, offering clean, zero-emissions energy for hydrogen trucks transporting cargo. Such innovative endeavors exemplify the Port of Oakland’s commitment to improving air quality in its vicinity.

Mr. Wan emphasized, “2024 is the year we take action to move the Port forward. Modernization will help us grow while reducing our impact on surrounding communities. It is our moment to modernize.”
