As part of Mayor Daniella Levine Cava’s Future Ready Plan for Miami-Dade County, PortMiami has launched a workforce development initiative aimed at bolstering the maritime sector. This comprehensive program features apprenticeship opportunities and a user-friendly website designed for both employers and job seekers. Included in the initiative are three new paid apprenticeship tracks tailored for diesel systems technicians, diesel off-road maintenance technicians, and commercial refrigeration technicians. PortMiami is collaborating with Seaboard Marine and the Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ Office of Postsecondary Career and Technical Education to offer one- and two-year apprenticeships. These programs integrate paid on-the-job training with classroom instruction, equipping participants with the skills needed for success in the maritime industry.

“This collaborative public-private partnership ensures that all residents have access to training and good-paying jobs, which will also help fill employment gaps in the maritime industry,” said Mayor Levine Cava. “We need to equip our residents for success in our community’s highest growth industries. The Miami-Dade Future Ready Plan is building the economy of the future, today.”

Adults aged 18 and above are eligible to enroll in three apprenticeship training programs offered by the Office of Postsecondary Career and Technical Education: the 1800-hour Diesel Systems Technician program, the 600-hour Diesel Off-road Maintenance Technician program, and the 450-hour Commercial Refrigeration Technician (Reefer) program. To apply, please contact 305-558-8000.

“We at Miami-Dade County Public Schools are thrilled to partner with PortMiami and Seaboard Marine on this pioneering initiative. These apprenticeship programs prepare our students with the skills necessary to thrive in the maritime industry,” stated Dr. Jose L. Dotres, Superintendent, Miami-Dade County Public Schools. “This is another reason why M-DCPS is the best choice.”

“As a trade leader in ocean transportation and logistics, it’s critical that we train, place, and retain a strong labor force at PortMiami,” said Bruce Brecheisen, Executive Vice President, Seaboard Marine. “Through this initiative, we are proud to shape the next generation of highly skilled professionals who will drive our industry’s continued growth and success.”
