Colombia experienced a significant earthquake followed by a notable aftershock on Thursday afternoon, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The initial quake, with a preliminary magnitude of 6.3, struck approximately 10 miles north of Cumaral shortly after 2 p.m. local time. Cumaral is situated about 50 miles southeast of Bogota, the capital of Colombia.

While injuries were not immediately confirmed, reports from news media revealed that residents in Bogota and Medellin, which is located around 152 miles northwest, felt the tremors, and buildings shook in response.

An aftershock of a preliminary magnitude of 5.7 followed the main quake, occurring about 4 miles southwest of Restrepo, according to the USGS. The agency’s data indicated that the initial earthquake’s depth was 10 miles, while the aftershock registered at a depth of approximately 5 miles.

The occurrence of these seismic events raises concerns about potential impacts on the affected areas and the local population. Further assessment will likely shed light on the extent of damage and any resulting injuries, highlighting the need for preparedness and response measures in the aftermath of such natural disasters.
