Fort Worth, Texas – In a harrowing incident, a powerful explosion rocked the historic Sandman Signature Fort Worth Downtown Hotel, leaving at least 21 people injured. The blast occurred in the bottom floors of the 245-room hotel, dating back to 1920, causing windows to shatter and debris to scatter across the street.
The Fort Worth Fire Department received the first call about a fire at around 3:32 p.m. local time, with subsequent calls reporting an explosion. The smell of gas permeated downtown Fort Worth, leading investigators to believe it was a gas explosion. Craig Trojacek, a spokesperson for the fire department, stated that federal investigators are collaborating to determine the exact cause.
Among the injured, one person is in critical condition, while four others are seriously wounded. The remaining victims sustained minor injuries. Emergency services worked diligently, with reports of people possibly trapped in the basement. Rescue efforts were hindered due to the explosion covering access areas.
Witnesses described the explosion as “very loud and very violent.” Mike Vanca, a hotel guest, recounted feeling the shockwave even from a nearby office. The blast damaged the hotel, known as “The Waggoner Building,” listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1979.
The Sandman Hotel, affected by the blast, announced a temporary closure for bookings. The explosion damaged a restaurant under construction in the building, though it’s not confirmed as the blast’s origin.
Atmos Energy, the natural gas provider, confirmed technicians on-site, isolating gas to the affected area. Texas Governor Greg Abbott assured readiness to deploy additional resources if necessary.
As investigations continue into the night, the Fort Worth community grapples with the aftermath of this unexpected and destructive event.
