A swath of severe storms has caused widespread power outages for over 200,000 utility customers in the Midwest, with more dangerous weather expected to impact the region over the weekend. Midwest as a massive heat dome continues to sprawl over much of the nation.

The combination of hot weather and the northern edge of the heat dome will set the stage for volatile weather conditions, with temperatures challenging or exceeding the hottest records set so far this season in more than a dozen central U.S. states. Widespread highs in the 90s Fahrenheit are expected, with some areas approaching 100 degrees.

Most of the storms are expected to form along the leading edge of a cooler air mass arriving from Canada. As this cooler air interacts with the hot and humid conditions, powerful thunderstorms will develop, bringing the potential for high winds, hail, torrential downpours, frequent lightning, and even the possibility of tornadoes.

Some of the strongest storms may produce hurricane-force wind gusts, large hail capable of damaging vehicles and crops, and heavy rainfall that could lead to urban flooding. As the storms push through major metropolitan areas like Chicago and Detroit, flight delays and ground stops at airport hubs are likely.

On Friday, the moderate risk of severe weather extends from northeastern Nebraska to southern Michigan and northern Ohio, making this region most susceptible to severe weather. A long-lasting complex of severe thunderstorms, potentially a derecho, affected parts of this corridor on Wednesday, spanning a 300-mile path from southeastern Lake Michigan to southern Lake Erie.

As Saturday brings daytime heating, thunderstorms will receive a boost, and additional severe weather is expected. The Midwest remains at risk for damaging storms throughout the weekend, prompting residents and travelers in the affected areas to stay alert and take necessary precautions to ensure safety amid the ongoing severe weather conditions.
