On March 6, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will officially open India’s inaugural under-river metro passage in Kolkata, which traverses beneath the Hooghly River. This significant engineering milestone is part of the East-West Metro corridor of Kolkata Metro, linking Howrah Maidan with Esplanade.

Additionally, on the same day, PM Modi is slated to inaugurate two more segments of the Kolkata metro: the Kavi Subhash-Hemanta Mukhopadhyay section and the Taratala-Majerhat stretch.

These new metro extensions are designed to alleviate road congestion and offer a more efficient, accessible, and comfortable mode of urban transport.

The segment between Howrah Maidan and Esplanade is notable for being India’s first-ever transit tunnel under a major river, with the Howrah Metro Station being the deepest in India at 33 meters below ground level.

The metro journey under the Hooghly river is expected to be completed in just 45 seconds, covering a distance of 520 meters.

Moreover, the Majerhat Metro Station stands out as an elevated station incorporating a canal, adding a unique feature to Kolkata’s metro network.

In addition to the metro projects, Prime Minister Modi will lay the foundation stone for the extension of the Pune Metro Rail project’s Phase 1, extending from Pimpri-Chinchwad Metro to Nigdi.

It is reported that PM Modi’s visit will include the inauguration and foundation laying of several connectivity projects in Kolkata, with a total investment of Rs 15,400 crores. His itinerary also includes a visit to Bihar on the same day.
