The private boat tourism in the backwaters of Kochi might become more systematized and specialized soon with the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA), taking care of the Marine Drive walkway, planning to build a jetty complex for tourist vessels.
The idea is to build a floating jetty very similar to the Kochi Water Metro and present a prepaid ticket booking arrangement for tourist vessels. This comes right after the Tanur boat disaster which points out the provisional jetties at Marine Drive which are ramshackle, posing a risk to the well-being of tourists.
Approximately, 60 private tourist vessels function from Marine Drive, which is one of the most conspicuous tourism places in Kochi.
Right now, these vessels function from provisional wooden jetties built by the boat operators.
Furthermore, there is no systematized ticket reservation structure and the operators are undecided
to decide on the charges and are frequently seen swindling tourists. Hence, with a new jetty complex,
GCDA targets to develop it as a center for tourist vessels.
As per GCDA sources, the basic strategy for the planned jetty is prepared and applications have been
requested from a couple of private firms. GCDA is also considering roping in the tourism division in this project and discussions with them would happen soon.
