Experience Abu Dhabi has unveiled its inaugural Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial (PAAD), a landmark cultural event launched by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi). Running until April 30, 2025, this dynamic exhibition is transforming Abu Dhabi and Al Ain into open-air galleries, offering a diverse display of global art that explores the concept of “public” through the lens of community, environment, and identity.
With over 70 international artists showcasing their work, PAAD invites both residents and tourists to engage with site-specific installations and live performances. The installations are strategically located in the downtown areas of both Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, ensuring easy access for the public. The event aims to make art accessible and foster connections across communities.

Notable pieces in the Biennial include Farah Al Qasimi’s Homesickness, an auditory sculpture that immerses visitors in ocean sounds symbolizing the cultural and environmental significance of the sea to the region. Seema Nusrat’s Floating Fragments explores the theme of climate change, depicting a terracotta-roofed house submerged by an imagined flood. Christopher Benton’s Where Lies My Carpet Is Thy Home reimagines the traditional Carpet Souk as a vibrant community space, encouraging engagement and collaboration. Afra Al Dhaheri’s D-constructing Collective Exhaustion is an immersive installation that examines time, attention, and presence, while Wael Al Awar’s Barzakh reflects on the intersection of architecture and materiality.
The Biennial’s curated routes guide visitors on foot or by car to explore Abu Dhabi’s prominent landmarks, offering a unique way to experience the city’s rich culture and artistic heritage. As the city continues to grow, the Biennial serves as a reminder of Abu Dhabi’s welcoming spirit and its deep-rooted traditions of hospitality and generosity.
Starting in January 2025, the second phase of the exhibition will introduce new art installations and activities, expanding the creative showcase across the city.
The Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial offers a one-of-a-kind opportunity for visitors to immerse themselves in the region’s artistic and cultural scene. With a focus on inclusivity and community engagement, the event is expected to become a must-visit for tourists in Abu Dhabi from November 2024 to April 2025.
