The Hawai‘i Tourism Authority (HTA) is hosting a community meeting to discuss proposed
actions for tourism in support of Maui’s economic recovery. The meeting is scheduled for Monday, December 4, at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Morgado Hall from 5:30 to 7
p.m. The public is encouraged to attend and provide feedback on draft strategies and actions, which have been shaped by input from the Maui community.
The Maui wildfires have inflicted severe impacts on residents and businesses. According to a rapid assessment by the Hawaiʻi State Department of Health, the top priority for households affected by the wildfires is Financial Recovery, identified by 29% of respondents. The persistently high unemployment rate and businesses reducing hours or closing further contribute to the challenges faced by the affected community.
In its ongoing commitment to aid Maui’s recovery, the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority (HTA) is formulating strategies to responsibly revitalize tourism. These plans are informed by input from the Maui community, economic data, and input from stakeholders across the state. The actions aim to complement and strengthen existing efforts, aligning with HTA’s Strategic Plan and the community-driven Maui Nui Destination Management Action Plan.
Daniel Nāho‘opi‘i encourages Maui residents to attend the meeting and share their feedback. He says, “Community collaboration is integral to Maui’s recovery, and our HTA team looks forward to reporting what we have heard from the community about how tourism can best support Maui’s recovery in a meaningful way while remaining respectful to Lahaina and Upcountry families.”
Parking will be available at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, with refreshments provided.
