This week marks the 16th edition of the Puerto Rico Open at the Grand Reserve Golf Club in Rio Grande, attracting some of the best talent to vie for a piece of the record $4 million purse. In a recent development, the Puerto Rico Tourism Company and the PGA TOUR have extended their partnership, ensuring the tournament’s continuation through 2026.

Carlos Mercado, Executive Director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company, expressed pride in renewing their commitment to the event, emphasizing its role in spotlighting Puerto Rico as a premier golfing destination and a catalyst for tourism and economic growth. Similarly, Tyler Dennis, PGA TOUR’s Chief Competitions Officer, acknowledged the invaluable support of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company over the past 16 years.

Puerto Rico consistently hosts top-tier golf events, highlighting its status as a prime golf destination. Brad Dean, CEO of Discover Puerto Rico, noted that the Puerto Rico Open perfectly exemplifies the exceptional golfing experience available on the island.

The event has seen participation from some of the PGA TOUR’s most notable figures and emerging talents. Representing Puerto Rico this year are Rafael Campos, the island’s sole PGA TOUR member, Chris Nido, and two promising amateur players, 15-year-old Evan Pena and 18-year-old Kelvin Hernández, with Pena being one of the youngest participants in a PGA TOUR event in the last decade.

The championship will unfold on the oceanfront course alongside the Hyatt Regency.

Nico Echavarría of Colombia, who clinched his first PGA TOUR win at last year’s Puerto Rico Open and was a contender for PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year, returns to defend his title. Campos, familiar with the course and having nearly sparked nationwide celebrations with his 2021 performance, is among the strong contenders.

Broadcast of the Puerto Rico Open will be available from Thursday to Sunday on multiple platforms, including the Golf Channel in the USA and Golf Channel Latin America in Spanish.
