China Overtakes Japan and All Other Countries in East Asia in Fueling Maldives Tourism With a Record 86% Share in Visitor Arrivals in 2026
East Asia is playing an important role in Maldives tourism in 2026, but the regional market is highly concentrated. Based on January to August figures for China, Japan, South Korea, Mongolia and North Korea, these five East Asian markets generated about 310,592 visitors to the Maldives, compared with 279,997 during the same period in 2025. This represents growth of approximately 10.9%. China dominates the picture. It contributed around 266,640 visitors, giving it approximately 85.85%, or nearly 86%, of arrivals from these five East Asian markets. Japan held 7.60%, South Korea 6.49%, Mongolia 0.05% and North Korea less than 0.01%. The numbers show how strongly Chinese travel demand is shaping the East Asian side of Maldives tourism in 2026.
China Powers Maldives Tourism With Nearly 86% of East Asian Arrivals
China stands at the centre of the East Asian tourism story for the Maldives. Around 266,640 Chinese tourists arrived between January and August 2026, compared with 236,890 during the same period in 2025. This represents growth of about 12.6%. More significantly, China generated approximately 85.85% of arrivals from the five East Asian countries analysed, up from 84.60% a year earlier. In simple terms, roughly 86 of every 100 visitors from these five markets came from China. The monthly pattern also shows powerful bursts of demand. February arrivals jumped sharply to 53,970, while July and August both approached the 50,000 mark. China added about 29,750 visitors year on year, making it the overwhelming source of additional East Asian tourism demand for the Maldives during the period.

Japan Strengthens Maldives Tourism as the Second-Largest East Asian Market
Japan remains an important supporting market for Maldives tourism despite operating at a much smaller scale than China. Japanese arrivals reached 23,616 between January and August 2026, increasing approximately 5.4% from 22,399 in the corresponding period of 2025. Japan represented about 7.60% of arrivals from the five East Asian markets, placing it second behind China. Monthly demand was uneven but showed several periods of strength. Arrivals increased from 3,057 in January to 4,274 in March before weakening through April, May and June. The market began recovering in July before jumping 83.1% month on month in August to 3,667 visitors. Japan therefore continues to add valuable tourism volume to the Maldives, even though faster Chinese growth reduced its regional share from 8.00% to 7.60%.

South Korea Keeps Maldives Tourism Flowing Despite Softer Demand
South Korea remains the third-largest East Asian tourism market in this comparison. It contributed 20,170 visitors to the Maldives between January and August 2026, representing approximately 6.49% of arrivals from the five East Asian countries analysed. However, this was about 2.0% lower than the 20,586 visitors recorded during the same period in 2025. The monthly figures reveal sustained pressure. Arrivals declined from 3,678 in January to 3,306 in February, 2,834 in March and 2,560 in April. May delivered a brief recovery, but the market weakened again through June, July and August. South Korea still contributes substantial visitor volume to Maldives tourism, but its regional share declined from 7.35% in 2025 to 6.49% in 2026 as China expanded much faster.

Mongolia Posts Fast Growth but Remains a Small Maldives Tourism Market
Mongolia presents one of the fastest percentage growth rates among the East Asian countries analysed, although the actual visitor volume remains very small. Mongolian arrivals increased from 119 during January to August 2025 to 164 in 2026, representing growth of approximately 37.8%. Mongolia nevertheless accounted for only about 0.05% of the five-market East Asian total. Monthly movements were dramatic because of the tiny base. Arrivals fell from 59 in January to six in March before surging to 47 in April. July then recorded another strong percentage increase as arrivals rose from five in June to 15. Mongolia therefore adds geographical diversity to Maldives tourism, but its contribution remains marginal compared with China, Japan and South Korea.

North Korea Has Almost No Measurable Impact on Maldives Tourism
North Korea remains statistically present in the East Asian dataset but has almost no measurable influence on Maldives tourism volumes. Only two North Korean visitors were recorded between January and August 2026, compared with three during the corresponding period in 2025. Its contribution therefore remained below 0.01% of arrivals from the five East Asian markets. One visitor arrived in January and another in April, while the remaining six months recorded zero arrivals. Month-on-month percentages are of limited analytical value because the numbers are so small. A movement from one visitor to zero creates a 100% decline, while moving from zero to one does not produce a meaningful percentage growth calculation. North Korea therefore has no material influence on the broader East Asian tourism trend for the Maldives.

China Defines the East Asian Tourism Story for Maldives in 2026
The January to August figures reveal a striking concentration of East Asian tourism demand. The five countries analysed generated approximately 310,592 visitors, up about 10.9% from 279,997 during the corresponding period in 2025. China alone contributed 266,640 visitors. Japan followed with 23,616 and South Korea with 20,170. Mongolia and North Korea together generated only 166 visitors.
China’s 85.85% share provides the central justification for the headline. Its share was more than 11 times Japan’s 7.60% and more than 13 times South Korea’s 6.49%. China also added approximately 29,750 visitors year on year, while the five East Asian markets together added around 30,595.
This means China generated roughly 97% of the net increase in arrivals across these five East Asian markets. Japan contributed additional growth, while Mongolia expanded rapidly from a tiny base. South Korea contracted slightly and North Korea remained negligible.
The numbers therefore show a clear tourism trend. China is not simply the largest East Asian source market in this dataset. Its scale and year-on-year expansion are driving almost the entire increase coming from the five markets analysed. Japan provides an important secondary flow, while South Korea continues to support Maldives tourism despite softer demand.
For the Maldives tourism industry, this concentration also highlights the importance of maintaining a diverse international visitor base. Strong Chinese demand can deliver substantial volumes, but continued growth from Japan, South Korea and other Asian markets can broaden the destination’s source-market mix.
In conclusion, China overtakes Japan and all other countries in East Asia in fueling Maldives tourism with a record 86% share in visitor arrivals in 2026, driven by 266,640 Chinese tourists between January and August. China alone accounted for about 85.85% of arrivals from the five East Asian markets analysed and generated roughly 97% of their combined year-on-year increase. Japan remained the second-largest market, while South Korea contributed steady volume despite a slight decline. The figures show that Maldives tourism growth from East Asia is being shaped overwhelmingly by China, making Chinese demand the dominant force in the region’s 2026 visitor market.
