Due to anticipated severe weather conditions affecting the Sydney area this afternoon, Airservices Australia has reduced the number of flights allowed to arrive and depart from Sydney, causing several cancellations and delays for all airlines.

To minimize disruptions, Qantas is deploying an Airbus A380 for its Melbourne to Sydney route to transport 485 passengers, effectively consolidating what would have been three Boeing 737 flights on this route.

The passengers were initially booked on three different flights scheduled to depart after 4pm, making it unlikely they were heading to Sydney for tonight’s Taylor Swift concert. Additionally, a fourth flight has been cancelled, but those passengers have been accommodated on other Qantas flights today.

The A380 being utilized today is usually kept as a backup to support Qantas’s international routes, such as flights to London and Los Angeles. However, due to the unusually high demand for flights into Sydney today, it has been allocated for domestic service.

Qantas’s operations teams, covering both domestic and international networks, have swiftly implemented a solution to ensure passengers can reach Sydney today, despite the challenging weather predictions.

Flight QF7168 is scheduled to leave Melbourne International Terminal 2 at 5:00pm, arriving at Sydney International Terminal by 6:40pm.

All affected passengers have been notified and informed about their new flight arrangements.

Passengers flying to Sydney today from other locations who find available seats may opt for an earlier flight.
