Qatar Duty Free (QDF), the entity responsible for managing all retail and dining establishments at Doha’s Hamad International Airport, unveiled a unique retail and dining concept called Souq Al Matar today. The grand opening event was attended by QDF’s leadership, VIPs, international and local media, as well as Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs).

Souq Al Matar, which translates to “Airport Market” in Arabic, is a traditional Qatari market located in the North Node terminal of HIA. It features seven shops and two restaurants and was created in collaboration with the renowned architect, Mr. Ibrahim M. Jaidah, known for his exceptional architectural projects in Qatar, including the Al Thumama Stadium.

Designed to provide travelers with a genuine Qatari experience, Souq Al Matar recreates the vibrant atmosphere and aesthetics of Qatar’s iconic traditional markets. The market boasts wicker woven ceilings, arched doorways, wooden-framed windows, and various decorative elements that immerse visitors in Qatari culture. Additionally, a prominent display of a dhow boat pays tribute to the maritime trade that thrived in Qatar and its strong connection to the markets.

During the first week of its opening, Souq Al Matar offers a range of cultural experiences, including live demonstrations of traditional craftsmanship like basket-weaving and Sadu weaving, which incorporates geometric patterns and vibrant colors. Greeters dressed in traditional Qatari attire welcome guests with Arabic coffee “gahwa” and dates, symbolizing Qatari hospitality and generosity. Visitors can also witness skilled artisans tailoring the Bishit, a traditional men’s robe, and Henna artists creating intricate designs on women’s hands.

At the opening event, a Naham group performed “sea music,” a tradition practiced by pearl divers for encouragement and entertainment during their journeys. Furthermore, an orchestral performance by renowned Qatari composer and songwriter Dana Al Fardan combined melodies from the past and present.

Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Officer, remarked, “Our aim has always been to ensure that the travel experience at Hamad International Airport remains one of the best in the world. Souq Al Matar offers passengers the opportunity to shop, dine, and experience a taste of Qatar right at the airport, elevating the airport experience to a cultural encounter rather than just a transit hub.”

Thabet Musleh, Senior Vice President of Qatar Duty Free, added, “Souq Al Matar not only offers something for everyone but also provides a truly unique experience. It goes beyond offering a ‘Sense of Place’ and delivers ‘transit tourism,’ bringing the essence of Qatar directly to travelers. This execution showcases our exceptional attention to detail and service, solidifying Qatar Duty Free as a leader in airport retail and dining.”

Ibrahim M. Jaidah, CEO & Chief Architect of Arab Engineering Bureau and IJAE Group, said, “Souq Al Matar was designed to transport guests through a vibrant and enchanting market, akin to the experience of visiting Qatar itself. With its traditional Qatari architecture, the market creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere, immersing travelers in a rich cultural experience. We invite all passengers to visit the Souq for an authentic Qatari encounter during their journey.”

Souq Al Matar offers a diverse range of shops and dining options that mirror the products and refreshments traditionally found in Qatar’s old markets. With two restaurants and seven stores, it caters to the preferences of all travelers, ensuring an inviting and inclusive space at HIA.

Here’s a brief overview of the shops and dining options:
