Explore global cultures at the Qemam Festival in Saudi Arabia, showcasing diverse mountain performing arts from around the world.

The Asir region in Saudi Arabia recently hosted the third edition of the Qemam International Festival for Mountain Performance Arts, a spectacular event that brought together local and global talent. The festival featured 45 groups from around the world, highlighting 40 different forms of mountain performing arts from Saudi, Arab, and international cultures. This event aimed to promote global cultural exchange and honor the diverse traditions of mountain performing arts.

The festival was graced with unforgettable performances, including those from a Chinese troupe. Their first act was a captivating Yao dance titled “Long Drum,” originating from the Han dynasty, demonstrating their artistic skill. Their second act, “Bronze Drum,” was a fusion of traditional art, music, and group choreography, creating a mesmerizing spectacle.

Japanese artists contributed with unique performances of Kokiriko Bushi, Hanagasa Ondo, and Genroku Hanami Odori. Meanwhile, a Spanish troupe captivated the audience with three acts set to traditional Spanish melodies, highlighting the authenticity and heritage of their art.

Sudan showcased the ancient Sudanese Ardah, and Jordan exhibited the lively ‘Dabkah’ with numerous variations. The Lebanese group performed Dabkah at eight heritage sites, emphasizing its importance in the Levant region. The Moroccan troupe presented Ahidouss, Obidat Al-Rama, and both solo and group performances of Amazigh Mountains.

An Iraqi group featured the art of ‘Gobi’ at various heritage locations, while Yemeni artists portrayed their rich culture through ‘Al-Samrah’ from Yafi and Al-Awd Mountain arts.

Italy displayed three mountain arts, including Mediterraneo Performance Arts, Old Ttarantella, and Ballad of SanCalogero. The Uzbekistani group enthralled the audience with ‘Lyasgi,’ showcasing individual and collective talents, adding a global touch to the festival.

Saudi Arabia’s own contributions were a testament to its cultural richness. Twenty groups from various regions performed traditional dances, reflecting deep-rooted customs and traditions.

Highlights included Al-Dammah Performance Arts, renowned for its vigor, ‘ Al-Le’ab Al-Shehri,’ a blend of poetry and music, and ‘Al-Khatwa,’ a prominent southern art from Aseer. Ardah from Al-Baha, a rhythmic group performance, along with ‘Msahabani,’ focused on rhythm, Al-Majroor from Taif, a prominent western art, and Al-Dahah from the north.

The Jazan region showcased various arts, including Al-Rabsh,’ The Sword,’ and & Al-Azzawi,’ forming a rich folk heritage that continues to influence the region’s culture.

Organized by the Theater and Performing Arts Commission, the festival’s aim is to globally showcase Saudi heritage, draw international attention to local events, and highlight Saudi efforts in cultural preservation. This third edition is in line with Saudi Vision 2030’s cultural strategy, showing the Commission’s dedication to international cultural exchange.

The Qemam International Festival for Mountain Performance Arts remains a distinctive platform for celebrating global diversity in mountain performing arts. Its yearly exhibition of traditional and contemporary acts plays a crucial role in encouraging cultural exchange and preserving the rich legacy of performing arts worldwide.
