The incident occurred on 10 July 2026 during the early stage of the scheduled European flight. The aircraft had only been airborne for several minutes when the emergency developed while climbing over the border region between northern Greece and North Macedonia.

The event created a major disruption for passengers travelling between Greece and southern Germany, but the controlled response by the flight crew prevented further escalation. A replacement aircraft was later arranged, allowing passengers to continue their journey to Memmingen.

Boeing 737-800 Experienced Engine Problem During Climb From Thessaloniki

Flight FR1879 was operated using a Boeing 737-8AS aircraft, part of the Boeing 737 Next Generation family. The aircraft was registered as 9H-QEU and operated by Malta Air, which forms part of the wider Ryanair aviation group. The aircraft departed Thessaloniki International Airport “Makedonia” during the morning for its scheduled flight to Memmingen Airport in Bavaria, Germany.

According to flight tracking information, the aircraft climbed rapidly after departure and reached an altitude of approximately 15,000 to 16,000 feet before the emergency occurred. During this phase, the aircraft experienced a serious issue involving the right-side engine.

The aircraft was powered by CFM International CFM56-7B engines, widely used on Boeing 737 Next Generation aircraft. Investigators are examining the engine components to determine the exact cause of the failure and whether any technical or maintenance factors contributed.

Cabin Decompression Occurred After Aircraft Damage

Following the engine-related event, debris from the affected area caused damage to the aircraft structure, including the passenger window section. The sudden damage resulted in a rapid change in cabin pressure. Oxygen masks were released inside the cabin as passengers experienced the effects of decompression. A passenger seated beside the affected window area suffered injuries during the incident.

The 61-year-old Serbian passenger was taken to AHEPA University General Hospital in Thessaloniki after the emergency landing. Medical updates indicated that the injuries were not life-threatening. The passenger received treatment for shock, injuries around the neck and shoulder area, and friction-related injuries caused during the decompression event. No other serious passenger injuries were reported.

Pilots Execute Emergency Return to Thessaloniki Airport

The aircraft crew responded immediately after the emergency was detected. The pilots declared an emergency, reduced altitude and turned the aircraft back towards Thessaloniki. Because the aircraft had departed with a significant amount of fuel required for the journey to Germany, it remained at a lower altitude while preparing for a safe return. The aircraft entered a holding pattern over the Thermaic Gulf area south of Thessaloniki to reduce weight before landing.

The aircraft eventually completed a safe landing at Thessaloniki Airport approximately 56 minutes after departure. Emergency teams were positioned to support the aircraft after arrival. Passengers were removed from the aircraft and transferred back to the terminal while safety inspections began.

The investigation team is examining multiple elements, including engine components, aircraft structure, operational data, maintenance history and technical records.

The aircraft entered service with Ryanair in 2008 and was approximately 18 years old at the time of the incident.
