The Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority Board approved a $419 million budget on Thursday for the upcoming fiscal year starting April 1. Anticipating record-breaking traffic of over 15.5 million passengers, an increase of 1.1 million compared to the previous fiscal year, the Fiscal Year 2024-2025 budget allocates $133 million towards operating expenses and earmarks $226 million for capital infrastructure investments.
“As our community grows and we welcome more airlines, flights and travelers, the Authority’s operating and capital budgets will help us invest in our workforce, technology and the community while building for the future,” said Michael Landguth, president and CEO of the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority. “We are keenly focused on maintaining a world-class experience for the 15.5 million passengers projected to fly through RDU in the coming fiscal year.”
Passenger Traffic Update: February saw a surge in passenger numbers with over 986,000 travelers passing through the airport, marking a 1.9 percent increase from January and a significant 10.7 percent rise from February 2023. As spring break commences, a six percent increase in traffic compared to last year is anticipated. Travelers are advised to plan ahead, arriving early, and pre-booking parking at rdu.com for a smoother journey.
Airline Relocation Announcement: In April, the Airport Authority will relocate two airlines to Terminal 1. Breeze Airways will initiate operations on April 2, followed by Sun Country on April 17. This strategic move aims to optimize gate space across both terminals, accommodate airline requirements, and prepare for continued growth in passengers and flights. Signage across the airport campus, including roads and parking areas, will be updated to guide guests accordingly. In the event of confusion, passengers can easily access Terminal 1 from Terminal 2 via a brief walk through the parking deck.
Frontier’s Route Expansion: Frontier Airlines is set to expand its service to five popular destinations next month, aligning with spring and summer travel demands. Starting April 10, routes to Boston, Miami, New York-LaGuardia, and Tampa will be added, followed by service to Chicago O’Hare on April 11.
