Kicking off 2024, Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) experienced unprecedented levels of passenger numbers in January, welcoming over 967,600 individuals. This represented a 10.5% increase from January of the previous year and a 4.6% rise compared to January 2019.

Michael Landguth, the CEO of Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority, highlighted the airport’s expansion in 2024, including welcoming a new carrier, introducing additional direct routes, and increasing flights to top destinations for travelers from the Triangle area. Despite January traditionally being a quieter month, the surge in passengers sets a promising tone for the year’s air travel demand.

The airport is set to receive a $12 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration as part of the Airport Terminal Program for enhancements to Terminal 2. This funding, sourced from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, will contribute towards expanding the security checkpoint, baggage claim, and Federal Inspection Station at Terminal 2.

On the international front, RDU recently celebrated the launch of a new service by Copa Airlines to Panama City, Panama, with flights scheduled four times a week. This addition marks RDU’s continued expansion in global connectivity, with recent introductions of flights to Paris by Air France, upcoming services to Frankfurt by Lufthansa, and to Mexico City by Aeromexico.

Domestically, Avelo Airlines is set to begin nonstop flights to Albany, New York, from May 10, enhancing RDU’s network to include this new destination. The airline, celebrating its first anniversary of base operations at RDU, operates with two aircraft and around 90 crew members stationed at the airport.

Breeze Airways is also expanding its offerings from RDU with three new seasonal routes to Syracuse, New York; Burlington, Vermont—a new destination for RDU; and Portland, Maine, broadening its total to 16 destinations served from the airport.

Further embracing sustainability, the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority plans to augment its electric bus fleet by acquiring six additional zero-emission electric buses, set to be operational by the upcoming fall. This expansion builds on the four electric buses currently in use, underscoring RDU’s commitment to eco-friendly transportation solutions and its pioneering role in the Research Triangle area’s adoption of electric buses since 2019.
