A renowned vacation destination has sounded the alarm with an urgent health advisory due to an unprecedented heatwave, where temperatures soared to a blistering 62C. In the neighborhood of Guaratiba, Rio de Janeiro, a staggering temperature of 62.3C was recorded, setting a new record for the city and prompting local authorities to issue a health warning.
This heatwave has shattered previous records, with Rio de Janeiro’s heat index, a measurement that considers humidity to convey the perceived temperature, reaching an all-time high of 62.3 degrees Celsius (144.1 degrees Fahrenheit). This figure represents the most extreme temperature the city has experienced in over a decade, according to weather experts.
On a particularly scorching Monday, the city’s actual maximum temperature peaked at 42C, as reported by the Rio Alert weather system. The extreme heat has raised concerns among residents, with beachgoer Eduardo Alves de Castro expressing anxiety over the escalating temperatures and their potential impacts, especially on those in less favorable living conditions.
Furthermore, administrative assistant Raquel Correia, aged 49, voiced her fears in a park in central Rio, highlighting the potential for worsening conditions due to rapid population growth and extensive deforestation fueled by housing expansion. These environmental changes, she fears, could exacerbate the heatwave’s effects.
Amidst these soaring temperatures, weather agency MetSul issued a warning about the upcoming week, anticipating very high risks for the center-south of Brazil. This forecast includes intense rainfall and storms, driven by a particularly severe cold front expected to bring torrential rains and possible gale-force winds. The situation underscores the volatile weather patterns affecting the region and raises concerns about the immediate and long-term impacts of such extreme weather events on the population and the environment.
