Regenerative Tourism Funding Announced for Offaly: A New Step Toward Sustainable Travel

Published on December 19, 2025

Offaly, a province located deep in Ireland’s Midlands, receives over 1.5 million euros as part of Ireland’s tourism regeneration scheme, being a project that seeks to ensure tourism regeneration and economic opportunities, especially among areas that are most affected by the end of fossil fuel and peat industries, an initiative that is backed by Just Transition Fund, an initiative of the European Union. According to this initiative, Offaly and entire Midlands are to reap the benefits of this funding that seeks to improve tourism infrastructure that is environmentally compliant.

The Role of Regenerative Tourism in Offaly’s Transition

The €1.5 million allocated to Offaly is part of a wider €5.5 million investment in the Midlands region, designed to foster the growth of regenerative tourism. This tourism model focuses on sustainability, local empowerment, and preserving the cultural and natural heritage of communities. By focusing on projects that prioritize low-carbon and eco-friendly practices, this initiative not only aims to boost tourism but also supports rural communities in transitioning to a greener, more sustainable economy.

Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment, Peter Burke, along with Fáilte Ireland, highlighted the importance of regenerative tourism in Offaly’s future. As the county moves away from traditional industries like peat harvesting, tourism has become a key avenue for economic growth. This funding will help businesses capitalize on the region’s natural beauty and cultural offerings while contributing to long-term job creation and environmental protection.

Four Key Projects to Receive Regenerative Tourism Funding

Offaly’s share of the funding will be used to enhance several key tourism projects across the county. The investments will improve accessibility, increase visitor numbers, and introduce innovative services that cater to the growing demand for sustainable tourism.

Ballycommon Bakehouse: Enhancing Accessibility for All

Ballycommon Bakehouse, located along the Grand Canal and Kilbeggan Greenways, will receive €45,560 in funding to enhance accessibility at their site. The funding will be used to build a wheelchair-accessible toilet block, ensuring that people with disabilities can comfortably enjoy the local attractions. This project represents the commitment to inclusivity and accessibility in Offaly’s tourism strategy, ensuring that everyone, regardless of physical ability, can participate in the local tourism experience.

Bellfield House and Gardens: Improving Visitor Experience

Bellfield House and Gardens, a popular visitor attraction, will receive €288,000 for various enhancements to improve accessibility and the overall visitor experience. This funding will be used to upgrade the visitor center, provide accessible toilets and ramps, install wayfinding signage, and create accessible walking trails. In addition, renovations will be carried out on existing buildings to house a reception area, gift shop, café, and workshop space. These improvements will help the venue cater to a broader range of visitors while also enhancing the overall experience for those already familiar with the site.

J Hest Ltd: Eco-Friendly Electric Boat Rentals

J Hest Ltd, located in Shannonbridge, will receive €80,000 to develop a fleet of eco-friendly, self-drive electric boats for rental at the Shannonbridge jetty. These boats will provide a sustainable way for visitors to explore the scenic River Shannon, which flows through Offaly. The eco-friendly boats are part of a larger initiative to promote green tourism and provide unique and environmentally responsible experiences for tourists. This project also contributes to the growing interest in sustainable water-based tourism in Ireland.

Mid Ireland Adventure: A New Safari Experience on the River Shannon

Mid Ireland Adventure, a tourism provider offering outdoor activities, will receive €200,000 to purchase a rigid inflatable boat (RIB) to offer a new and unique safari experience on the River Shannon at Banagher Marina. This project aims to attract adventure tourists by offering an exciting way to experience the natural beauty of the region. The boat will provide an eco-friendly and thrilling way to explore the River Shannon, enhancing the outdoor adventure options available to visitors.

Supporting Sustainable, Low-Carbon Tourism in Offaly

One of the key themes of the Regenerative Tourism and Placemaking Scheme is sustainability. By promoting low-carbon tourism experiences, these projects align with broader environmental goals while attracting eco-conscious travelers. Offaly’s funding supports this by prioritizing initiatives that not only improve tourism infrastructure but also encourage sustainable practices in the hospitality and tourism sectors.

Deputy John Clendennen, representing Offaly, emphasized the importance of tourism as a means of creating new economic opportunities for the region. “Tourism has a vital role to play in creating new economic opportunities and long-term employment while protecting our natural environment,” he said. This vision aligns with the goals of the regenerative tourism program, which seeks to create a balance between economic growth and environmental preservation.

Increasing Accessibility and Visitor Satisfaction

In addition to supporting eco-friendly initiatives, the funding also addresses the importance of accessibility. For Offaly to remain competitive in the tourism sector, it is crucial that the region’s attractions are accessible to all visitors, including those with disabilities. The investment in accessible infrastructure will make it easier for all tourists to experience the beauty and culture of the area, which will, in turn, increase visitor satisfaction and lead to longer stays.

The efforts to make Offaly a more accessible and welcoming destination are expected to have a long-term impact on the region’s tourism industry. By attracting a wider range of tourists, the county can strengthen its reputation as a top destination for sustainable and inclusive tourism in Ireland.

Economic Benefits for Local Communities

The tourism projects supported by the Regenerative Tourism and Placemaking Scheme are expected to create new job opportunities and boost local businesses in Offaly. As more tourists visit the region, they will contribute to the local economy by spending on accommodations, food, activities, and local services. This influx of tourism dollars will benefit small businesses in particular, creating a ripple effect that supports the overall economic development of Offaly.

The projects also represent an opportunity for local residents to participate in the growing tourism industry. With increased demand for sustainable tourism experiences, local entrepreneurs can capitalize on the new opportunities by providing services that meet the needs of eco-conscious travelers.

A Promising Future for Offaly’s Tourism Industry

Soufli, with a focus on improving infrastructure, encouraging local spending, and supporting eco-friendly tourist practices, is poised to have a very bright future ahead of it in international tourism. The initiatives of the town to attract more tourists, with a focus on retaining its identity, will ensure that Soufli continues to remain an important part of Greece’s tourist industry for many years to come.
