The Rio Hotel & Casino is illuminating the night with a mesmerizing visual spectacle that engulfs the entire facade of the property. Crafted through a collaboration between renowned lighting designers Chris Kuroda and Andrew Giffin, this expansive installation boasts over three miles of programmable LEDs, crafting an ever-changing light exhibition visible across the Las Vegas valley.
Chris Kuroda, a luminary in the lighting industry, has garnered acclaim for his decades-long partnership with the iconic jam band Phish, spanning nearly 1,800 live performances. Departing from the static neon signs typical of the Las Vegas skyline, the Rio’s exterior transforms into a dynamic canvas, drawing upon Kuroda’s expertise in the live music realm. Each display is a unique, live artwork, diverging from repetitive color schemes and effects. Instead, Kuroda and Giffin leverage techniques from Phish’s live shows to meticulously program every pixel, ensuring a thoughtful and unprecedented lighting experience with each viewing.
“The transformation of the Rio Hotel & Casino has reached a key milestone with the recently renovated exterior.” said Trevor Scherrer, President of Rio. “For decades red and blue neon have been a staple of this iconic property. Led by the creative vision of Chris Kuroda, this new lighting experience is sure to reinforce to both visitors and locals alike that something truly special is happening at the Rio.
