The late summer to early fall 2026 tourism agenda for Austria is incorporating new travel possibilities in Innsbruck and Hallstatt, where itineraries will be centred on alpine activities, city sightseeing, and underground exploration of history.

Innsbruck Connects Alpine Recreation With City Attractions

Innsbruck is preparing for the 2026/27 winter season with the SKI plus CITY Pass Stubai Innsbruck, a combined travel product covering 12 ski areas and 23 city and regional attractions. The pass is valid from October 2026 through April 2027 and is designed for visitors who want to combine mountain activities with sightseeing during one stay.

The pass links Innsbruck with ski areas in and around the Stubai Valley, allowing travellers to build itineraries that include skiing, cable-car access and city attractions. Participating attractions cover museums, cultural sites and other visitor experiences, creating options for days when travellers are not skiing or when mountain activities are scheduled around weather and operating conditions.

For travellers using Innsbruck as a base, the pass also incorporates ski-bus travel to participating ski areas. Its validity ranges from two to 21 days, allowing visitors to match the pass duration with the length of their stay. Adult prices for the October 2026 to April 2027 period begin at €162 for two days and rise to €819 for 21 days.

The Innsbruck tourism offer therefore brings together alpine and urban travel within the same destination. Visitors can schedule mountain activities alongside museums, historic attractions and city sightseeing instead of structuring the entire trip around a single outdoor experience. The arrangement also supports short breaks as well as longer winter holidays in the Tyrolean capital.

Hallstatt Reopens Its Historic Salt-Mining Attraction

Hallstatt has meanwhile restored access to one of its most important heritage attractions. Salzwelten Hallstatt and the Hallstatt funicular reopened on August 29, 2026, following 362 days of construction and modernisation work.

The reopened Salzwelten presents the history of salt mining in Hallstatt, where salt has been extracted for more than 7,000 years. The visitor area has been modernised, while the new funicular provides access to the salt mountain, the High Valley and the Skywalk. The funicular has been designed with barrier-free access, adding a new transport option for visitors reaching the mountain attraction.

The redevelopment has also introduced additional visitor facilities at the mountain station. These include the Weitblick 7000 bistro, a panoramic terrace and a new 300-square-metre flagship store. Together, the facilities expand the services available to travellers visiting the salt mine and high valley.

The reopening is significant for autumn itineraries because the underground salt mine provides a heritage-focused experience beyond Hallstatt’s lakeside centre. Travellers can combine the historic village with a mountain excursion centred on the region’s long salt-mining history, adding another destination experience to a Salzkammergut itinerary.

Salzwelten Hallstatt’s published schedule lists the salt mine from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from August 29 through October 24, 2026. The funicular operates from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. during that period. From October 25, the salt mine closes at 3 p.m., while the funicular operates until 4:30 p.m., making advance itinerary planning important for late-autumn visitors.

Travellers should also consider access arrangements when visiting Hallstatt. Salzwelten advises visitors that it does not operate its own parking facilities and recommends public transport because parking availability can affect arrival times during busy periods. The funicular and salt-mine combination can therefore be incorporated into a wider public-transport itinerary through the Salzkammergut.

Austria Records Strong Tourism Demand

Austria’s wider tourism figures provide the national backdrop for these destination developments. Statistics Austria reported 41.87 million overnight stays between May and July 2026, representing a 3.2 per cent increase compared with the same period in 2025. July recorded 19.46 million overnight stays, up 4.8 per cent year on year, while guest arrivals reached approximately 5.97 million.

The latest figures also show strong international demand. Non-resident guests accounted for 14.68 million overnight stays in July, an increase of 5.9 per cent from July 2025. Germany remained Austria’s largest international source market during the month, followed by the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, and Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

Travel Options Across Innsbruck and Hallstatt

In relation to Austria travel itineraries throughout late summer, fall, and the start of winter, the two destinations offer different destination configurations. Innsbruck offers a combination of both mountain areas and city sites via a multi-day pass, while Hallstatt presents a combination of lakeside destinations along with salt-mine underground heritage.
