The Department of Tourism has refuted claims from certain media sources alleging damage to the floating bridge at Muzhuppilangad in Kannur due to rough seas on Sunday. On the same day, the Tourism Department instructed all district tourism promotion councils (DTPCs) to temporarily close all floating bridges designated for tourists across the state. These bridges were then relocated from the sea to be securely stored onshore, including the one at Muzhappilangad. This decision was prompted by the perilous sea conditions along the coast and the advisories issued by weather agencies.
In partnership with DTPCs, the Kerala Adventure Tourism Promotion Society, and local governing bodies, the Department of Tourism installed these floating bridges at various beaches including Bekal (Kasaragod), Beypore (Kozhikode), Muzhappilangad in Kannur, Thanoor Thooval in Malappuram, Chavakkad in Thrissur, Kuzhuppilli in Ernakulam, and Varkala in Thiruvananthapuram.
Constructed using high-density floating polyethylene blocks, these floating bridges measure 100 meters in length and three meters in width, with support pillars on either side. Each bridge also boasts an end platform measuring 11 meters in length and seven meters in width, providing visitors with breathtaking views of the sea.
These floating bridges are a significant attraction for both tourists and local vacationers, enriching their experiences at the state’s premier beaches.
